I guess she's just really insightful and intuitive and a great reader of human behavior. She does the same thing to all her friends which ends up taking a lot out of her. She's actually been learning to hold back a bit with her friends as they tend to rely on her to constantly help them and guide them.

She really should be charging for her amazing skills (but she really doesn't want to do that sort of work for a living at the moment).

Erin, you must find it takes a ton out of you to be reading and guiding people all the time. I imagine it must be so draining.

It was very draining in the beginning. At the end of the day I felt headachey and like I got hit by a truck. But my guides have taught me how to prevent that from happening. But it does take a lot out of me. I am in the ether for hours each day and at the end of the day I need grounding big time.

I wouldn't say good or bad in relation to the Higher Self. I would say more its' a process of evolution with some higher selfs being more ascended than others.

One thing I am getting at is whether the evil acts perpetrated by human beings are always (or usually) deviations from the actors' spiritual contracts.

To take an extreme example, how far did Hitler deviate from his spiritual contract? Was he destined to be a great leader, but then his ego added war and genocide to the mix? Or did his Higher Self regret only that the Third Reich was not completed?

Which brings me to another question. Is every Higher Self the same species or "race"? And if not, can a Higher Self be racist?

Are there factions and conflicts among the Higher Selves, or are they all basically united for the betterment of humanity?

What is the nature of a least-ascended Higher Self? Would it necessarily have good advice for its incarnated self?

Is there a way to know how ascended one's Higher Self is?

About a year ago my therepist decided that I no longer needed her as I was no longer deeply grieving over my late Ex. I felt a bit lost, but I agreed to end the sessions. Around that time a spirit came to me in a dream saying "Let me be your therapist now." I'm guessing this was my higher self.

I'm glad you have new faith in yourself. Healing takes time. It's been said that we often seek answers outside ourselves when we already sense answers inside. It can take a while to listen close enough to hear ourselves think.

such a great article from awhile back Erin! I had to finally sign in and resurrect it!

Two questions:

1. Is it possible that the HS can be 'enlightened' enough that when connecting no other guides or entities come through with it? I'm trying to decipher what level of 'purpose' may be in store for me as 2 readings with 2 different people have come to the same conclusion about a lonely Gandalf like figure as my HS, although my wife would beg to differ.

2. Is 'stepping back into or merging with the HS' the primary goal of living/learning here as human beings? I usually think of Gandhi as the strongest current example. So many of us feel trapped living a fast paced Western existence with no idea how to transform oneself so completely, at least not without shirking responsibilities and the people we love. It would appear most pass through a life with some personal growth, but not a lot, while a destined few go the distance. Just curious to know what the 30,000 foot view is and how it parallels or diverges with Buddhist life philosophy.

Merging and stepping back into HS is part of what we're here to do. Tuning in to your higher self is like the character in a video game tuning in to the guy controlling him. Imagine what he could do if he understood the parameters of the game from the player's mind instead of just his own.

Im sure you have spirit guides but not all psychics will detect them.

Hi Erin,

I read with interest your blog post about connecting with HS. The part when you talk about walking through the supermarket with a silly grin on your face made me grin too as I have done this myself. I understand that in the past there have been moments where I was connected to my HS as a lot what you wrote about resonated with me.

But, how come I seem to loose touch with my HS and then rediscover it? It seems like my life is a constant ebb and flow of connecting with HS and then sabotaging myself again. I don't get it to be honest.

Also, how do I know which is my spirit guide? I read your blog post too but not sure how I can find my Bob or whatever name it is?

Have you got any suggestions as of what I should do to connect?

I suggest connecting with your higher self first, then let your HS introduce you to your guides. Do a meditation where you meet your higher self in a garden and chat with her, then after you've established a good communication, ask to meet your guides. They'll come to the garden and introduce themselves.

I'm not always connected with my HS though I guess I am most of the time now that I think about it. Just continue to consciously invite her around.

So I'm a little late in reading this, but now I have and I am confused.

Earlier Erin said the subconscious and higher self are not the same. However, there are two methods given for communicating with the higher self which have already been given on the site for communicating with the subconscious, specifically.

Steve gave the journaling method for communicating with the subconscious and Erin, in the lucid dreaming podcast, you said you spoke directly with your subconscious and that lucid dreaming is a way to speak with your subconscious to bypass all the nonsense symbolism (looks like all nonsense in my dreams).

How are we to know if we are communicating with the subconscious or the higher self? I have actually tried Steve's journaling method to access the subconscious and the times I get answers, I just assumed it was from my subconscious, but it really didn't feel like it, because my mind would be a blank and an answer comes, just a few words, sometimes even just one adjective, no sentence, very brief and concise, then silence again, not the stream of words and associations that Steve talks about in the podcast. Times that this method doesn't work for me, I will ask a question and my mind just stays blank, nothing at all comes.

So which are these methods good for - subconscious or higher self and how can we feel the difference?

I have a completely different way of getting in touch with my higher self.

Sometimes when dancing to electronic dance music or listening to music with a certain energy, I feel like I'm 'blown open'. In this moment I feel absolutely confident, peaceful, loving and happy.

In those moments, or the days after such moments if they were strong enough, I feel a very clear sense of direction within the core of my being. It feels a bit like a 'push' or a reminder: THIS is what you're living for. I've learned to listen well to this voice and it's the driving force of my intuition. Some days, weeks or months, my intuition guides me with just about everything Sometimes I stop listening - which leads to stress and slight depression usually (you never know better than your HS, stop trying ).

I'd say our communication is somewhat telepathic. I have trouble seeing my HS as a person though... I see more of a bright human-shaped energy field interconnected with the universe through webs. So the idea of having tea & cookies with my HS seems weird - but absurdity can be a great key to breaking down the fallacies of logic-created spiritual symbols and can bring you back to the core of it all.

Can some "imposters" play pranks when you are trying to connect yourself with the HS and give you answers? ( wrong advices?)

Is the Hs a human form?. Like the shamans strongly believe in animal form?

i tried reading the thread from A to Z but I cant go any further I am already getting square eyes and headaches!!! sorry if the questions might have already been asked.

Funny you should mention it; Hitler was very much into Psychic power. The Nazis actually subscribed to a group of psychics called "The Vril Society" (The All German Society for Metaphysics) that claimed to be able to channel not just spiritual beings but "exterterrestrials". Scientists are slow to laugh at this theory as Nazi Germany was 25 years ahead of the rest of the world in aerospace technology.

Which again brings up the question: "Just who are you really channeling"?

Awesome article . I was wondering, I have connected to what I believe, and i am pretty sure, is my spirit guide: Gabriel. And I connect to him/her the same way you describe we should connect to our HS. SO I ask you, how can I distinguish between my HS and my Spirit Guide?

When you meet your higher self he or she should feel like you. it's like meeting yourself. When you meet a guide it will feel like meeting someone else, a friend or acquaintance who has their own distinct personality. My conduit guide, Bob, is hilarious, far funnier than I am. he has a really distinct personality. My other guide, Keith, is young and energetic and helpful; reminds me of Jimmy Olson from Superman.

But my higher self feels like the best version of me. She is wise, caring, compassionate, strong-willed, etc.

After feeling very upset in the morning because of the suffering in the world, I read a lot of articles on your Blog (Erin) - maybe more than 20 - and I really loved them. So I decided - if I'm gonna figure out how to cope with the multitude of challenges that I am creating for myself, I'd better have a chat with the one in charge of it all - my HS. So I began addressing him, while walking through the park - I said 'hey, I'm kind of enjoying those challenges even though they feel pretty damn crazy', and I thought I heard him say 'I knew you would' - and I said 'you knew, huh?'... And then I began asking him more things, such as ''am I gonna get over this and that by the end of this year?'', ''am I gonna find someone?'' - he was very confident in me - just as I am, and he reassured me, but the messages weren't complex, or at least, I couldn't discern them.

And then I said - man!... am I really talking to my HS? And I asked him - am I really talking to you? I couldn't get an answer, so I asked him to give me a sign. I was sure he would - in fact, I was expecting to run into some kind of big ad with a meaningful message written on it, but I decided to remain patient and not force it. After only 4 minutes and a few changes of direction through the park, I reached the boulevard and there it was - a sign up on a pylon on the edge of the street saying ''together for better or for worse'' - and there were such signs on every single pylon along the boulevard. I said - that's it, that's got to be it. It was an add for a political campaign of course, but it doesn't matter. And then I saw even another sign, of a different kind, on the middle of the road separating the two lanes (between the bushes and flowers) - a big add, saying ''in family, we can overcome problems easier''.

Yes, that is commmunication with your higher self. The more you talk to him the easier it will be to establish the connection.

Most of the time people just blow these things off as imagination or talking to themselves. Don't do it. Unless the voice is telling you to do destructive things or telling you that you should do this or that, then start listening, and acting on what they say. See how much better your life starts going. Avoid a pitfall or two
