a STRANGE experience

Not too sure where to start.
I've been interested and intrigued by spiritualism for a while now and been to a few demonsatraions.
The thing is, the more I delve into it, the more scared I get about bad spirits, demons etc so then I stop and carry on life as normal only to come back a while later.
My gran passed away a few months ago and eventually I decided to go to another medium demonstration after not going for over a year.
The lady said how I have heard spirits (which I always felt I had but wasn't too sure)
So I decided to delve back into things again, however I woke suddenly earlier on.
Looking back now I think I was in and out of sleep/dream state.
I remember hearing voices, but they werent really saying much - just mentioning names, then something weird happened, I felt like I was being seperated, it was like nothing I had ever experienced. I felt the presence of someone else - I don't think they emitted any type of bad, but also there was no good there either. I remember saying (or thinking?) "Whose there?" Then I awoken.
Now I'm really scared to go back to sleep, I'm absolutely shattered,
It was about 3:10am roughly when it happened (if that means anything)

I've never done any type of lucid dreamiing as far as I am aware, or any astral travelling etc.
I am still entrigued about things, it would be great to learn more, but how can I do so without the fear - and what was it I experienced earlier?
