Although nice example, extra hard work doesn't always lead to a promotion or a raise. In fact I would say in this day and age, people expect more bang for the buck without giving any reward. I think times are changing and hard work isn't praised as much as it used to. I work in a job where, I work extra hours, do extra curriculum, get praised for my work and the extra effort I put in (my supervisor tells me I put her to shame with my attention to detail), but still next month I will be getting no work from this department, no raise, no permanent work. Sorry to be a downer, just giving another perspective from my own observations. I think yes going that "extra mile" was praised, but now it's just expected. I personally don't mind putting in the extra effort, because I enjoy what I do, and it makes my life easier if I am well prepared (overly prepared) but apart from that I have seen no real benefit from an employee perspective. Interesting stuff, The article makes perfect logical sense in an indealistic world. In my experience in the UK you work harder for some corporate companies and they just keep sucking you dry. You try and find ways of benefitting the company, the boss or people above you see it as a threat to their jobs. You have to be very carefull here, we have a tall poppy mentality. Work smarter not harder. Make the right friends and influence the right people. A version 2.0 could be 'want a raise? find the right people, go play golf with them'. |
