Understanding Your Life Purpose
Erin - excellent post! Do you have a link you can share with us on how we ask our guides ourselves for guidance as to our life purpose? I'm not sure if you've blogged about that before. Is it just through meditation?
Try this blog entry:
Spirit Guides: Who are they and how do you connect with them?
Just joined the forums but wanted to say how good the article was, I've found them and Stevens helpful for many years.
Out of interest do you do written readings rather then telephone? I do mean to try a reading sometime in the future.
That was an extremely helpful post. Thank you! I am going to try journaling and meditating, as well as trying to be more intuitive by listening to my gut.
My guide made fun of me when I directly asked him. I knew the answers intuitively while I read the article.
But I asked anyway, and he was like, "You know... I was answering your question before you even asked it."
His tone was so humorous and teasing. I could feel it. It made me smile.
I don't hear or see anything. I just know, and sometimes feel things (like humor and irony in this situation).
Anyway, jolly good article. It clears things up for me. I was confused because I don't have this great desire to go change things, because I believe in subtle changes through love and living in a higher vibrational state..
But many of the people I've been meeting are all for changing the world and giving certain people more access to material things. But I keep thinking how to help people anywhere and everywhere understand that they can be happy with however little they have and that they can take control of their lives.
I knew both types of approaches are needed in the world, and this article was the confirmation I needed to help keep me from thinking I'm wrong not to concentrate on the first approach.

I think I definitely am in the first category. Although I feel passionate about sharing what I learn, it appears that my personal growth is my primary motivation at the core.
Which makes me feel slightly conflicted, as I come from a culture where selfishness is strongly looked down upon.... but I already know what the proper response to that is. I just am working on reaching deep enough to rescript that particular conditioning. It's taken me a while.
Thanks for the article -- it's always enlightening to hear from a medium.
oooo wonderful timing!
i had my big moment of life purpose realization sometime last week or so? the whole package of getting a shiver down your spine and you start tearing up after you stated fully what your purpose is. it was quite wonderful! the only problem was that i was in the middle of downtown at lunch time and i was tearing up as i was walking past everyone!
anyway, i'm slightly confused as you put teachers and healers in one category but put lightworkers in another. can't they be both? aren't they both? or lightworkers are simply 'reminding' us of what we already know but we've just forgotten? aren't lightworkers healers? like reiki masters?
There's sort of a difference between Lightworkers and lightworkers. lightworkers are people very aligned with faith, love, trust in the universe and themselves. Lightworkers with a capital "L" are people who are more highly evolved coming back to have a big impact, like Jesus for example.
But remember everyone is also having a personal growth experience and learning new things. And everyone is also having at least some impact on the people close to them or whose lives they touch.
Hey, awesome read. That was pretty cool - I had no idea peoples' life purposes tended to fall into two general categories. And I knew exactly which one I fell into while reading it. The second. How remains to be seen. But the article gave me clarity, so thanks!
Thank you for this post Erin!
You really helped me further define, as well as validate, what I already felt is my purpose while here. I felt a strong connection to the second category that you described, because for a long time now I've felt the urge to make a noticeable impact on humanity. Within my family circles I'm often considered something of an "old soul" of sorts, understanding or having a knowing of certain realities that are far removed from most people's lives, as well as my age group.
Although, I'm not sure how specifically an understanding I have of my purpose yet. Communicator and Teacher have a similar appeal to them because- it's within my nature to teach people of concepts and possibilities of human potential, etc, if they are curious of such things. Yet, there are times I liked to communicate a lot between groups of like minded individuals, often listening to what they have to say and asking questions where necessary. I realize this isn't a zero-sum situation, so I don't have to strictly adhere to one choice because everything is interconnected and has it's place. Although, I do feel a much stronger draw towards teacher, it would explain quite a few things in my life.
I consider the article to be a well place syncronicity, it appeared at a time that I was once again putting a lot of energy into focusing on my purpose, working on defining it more thoroughly. It has been welcome help.
This is actually pretty depressing. All along I thought I was a Lightworker with a capital "L". Now, noticing the life events I've been having and the actual "impact" I've been having, I now know that I'm more of a small letter "l" lightworker.
But as Stargirl said, both approaches are needed. We can't all be leaders, I think. I mean, if everyone's the "Leader" who'd do the Leader's grunt work? ;)
I think a good future article suggestion would be what categories/energy groups that Erin's been encountering from her readings. I'd definitely wait for that article.
What appeals more to you right at this moment? Does it have the potential to become a vessel in which to create noticeable impact at it's extreme end? Can it act as a prerequisite to something far greater than itself?
YESSSS!!!!! You are absolutely right.
I also see the difference, between growth people and impact people.
Also btw, I think that the division between alpha type and beta type people is related-
some people are very targeted, direct with their energy outward, and know exactly what purpose they have to accomplish.
Others are more laid back, take things as they come, energetically focused more inward.
When I had spiritual teachers and coaches, etc, I noticed that a lot of them try to put people into the 'growth' category, self focus, and telling them to 'just be' etc, but this is not the right category or approach for everyone.
For those who have a clear purpose, and energy to direct outward, action approach is better than the passive approach.
It's definitely good to see this differentiation.
Thank you for this article!!!!
This post got me rather confused because my personal choice is to be a lightworker but in the same time I feel I have some personal growth to do to gain confidence and authority in order to help people.
So I feel I am a little bit of both categories.
Right now I think it would be cool to have some spirit guide validation to gain clarity.
Not posting for any reason but to say that i really enjoyed the post Erin. It's great to find out what sort of patterns emerge when you deal with that many people! It's so enlightening and something that you just don't have access to unless you do it day in day out.
knightwhosaysni, in my reading I was pegged as being a bit of both categories too. It made sense to me too. I really don't feel capable of making a huge impact now, but at the same time I have set more or less an expectation of myself that I will down the road. My whole life and all my energy is pretty much pointing in that direction.
A quote from my reading was: "you'll be more help to someone who is at Level 10 when you're Level 50, than you are when you're Level 12." I've been learning the hard way that people listen better when you set a good example than when you just kind of spout advice. This is probably because the more you go back in the past, the less capable I was of setting a good example.
By the standards in the article, I am more love than Love.
Awesome article! It resonated with me because it runs orthogonal to the standard personal development writing of "you have a purpose" and "you have a specific purpose".
My personal experience state that I lie in having a growth experience because whenever I ask myself what my purpose is, I tend to get answers like "to lead, to inspire, to experience, to grow." I'll have to explore this more in my spirit writing (automatic writing) sometime this weekend, just to see if there is a deeper layer beyond this or if there is a more specific direction that I should focus on.
Steve keep up the good work :)
Just curious...if you don't necessarly have an infinity towards growing and changing could that possibly mean you're the second type?...as some people have stated above.
I've always known that I've wanted to get into Sports and Music, as I've always had a great passion for them. Could these be the mediums where I can best express myself or is there other reasons for being passionate about these things..or...? Anyways thanks to anyone who attempts to answer these questions.
Purpose is OVERRATED
Why does everyone feel that their purpose here on Earth is to bend the world with their pinky finger?
You can't NOT fulfill your purpose. You are a cell in a "body" (the earth and then the galaxy and then the universe and so on and so on) that is much larger and complex than you are, and it would be impossible for you to understand the larger picture with 100% clarity.
Like a fish swimming through the water, you will leave ripples no matter what, and those ripples, no matter how small or large they are, will be your purpose!
It's like a blood cell asking itself all day long "what is my purpose?". It's purpose is to be a blood cell! And it can't really die without fulfilling that purpose.
People should really ask themselves "what am I here to LEARN?" rather than "what is my purpose". You will accomplish your purpose. But will you learn all you hoped to learn from this experience? That's what people really should ask themselves.
*sighs* that leads me to my subject - purpose is SO overrated!!
One more thing
Also, while I was on the subject of purpose, I just wanted to ask why one purpose would be capitalized and the other not?
All purposes are capitalized and at the same time lower case, you know?
Each and every bead on the string is an integral part of the whole, and the beauty of the necklace is derived from the different colors it displays - some black, some white, some orange, some pink, some large, some small.
Each and every soul that has lived on this Earth has had a magnifent purpose that 99.9% of the time was unsung and unknown. Even the most "evil" of the "evil". Even evangelicals! lol
Good point :)
Is it possible that the purpose of my life cold be to experience suffering , failure and sickness ?? Or is this a mask for my ego ??
