Black Animal Spirit?

ok. first off i will say that if i'm not dreaming about my own cats in my dream, any significant dreams i've had with animal spirits are always black.
does this mean they're negative energy? i don't believe in stereotyping colours, but there seems to be certain symbols that go along with them, so i don't necessarily assume black is negative.

the reason why i'm posting this is that last night, i went to join my cat in my backyard as we don't like to leave her outside by herself at night as she is soon to turn 19 years old. for whatever reason i chose to leave the flashlight on the table...
so i go outside.. i don't see my cat.. but i see this black.. thing.. move across my backyard.. i say 'thing' because it reflected no light. there were two dots or two patches of something.. 'light' from i would assume the face or something.. but it didn't necessarily look like eyes..
usually when my cat travels through the backyard you see her definite shape -- this did not have a definite shape.. it was blurred.. and you could say that it looked like the size of a teenage raccoon -- again it did not reflect any light from the street lamp.
after it crossed my backyard it disappeared once it hit pure darkness again, and there was no noise of it jumping over the fence like other neighbourhood cats and raccoons make.

if anything the blurred shape of moving energy reminded me of what that disease that inflicted different animals and the main character in princess mononoke...
any thoughts? should i be worried about my cat?

(also i ran back inside after i heard no noise coming from this thing to get the flashlight and when i came back my cat was sitting peacefully in another part of the garden with her back turned from where it had travelled)

hmm ok. i won't rule out the possibility.. possums in my area tend to be grey though. this 'thing' still didn't have an outline.. but maybe that happens when animals are black?
it also looked like it was made up of balls of energy of different densities.. and it definitely didn't show any signs of a tail.
again when raccoons and cats walk through my garden they show some sort of outline.. this didn't.

i also got in contact with a local shaman to make an appointment and she said she would be contacting her spirit guides to see if she's the right person for me. so i asked her this morning as she called to confirm an appointment and she told me that she has no idea what it is.. but something usually happens in between the time a person makes contact with her.. and when we have our actual meeting... so i'm going to just take it with a grain of salt (the occurance) and assume its either a possum.. or that 'thing' that happens...
just for information sake:
i've also been on a detox (some chinese ancient herbs)... have changed my diet.. attempting to clear my chakras, doing yoga in the mornings and just recently started eating these natural cocoa food bars.
