Default Paranoia. Help!

a while ago this year i considered my self a semi-badass kid. where i would be able to do sorta illegal things and not really care, get away with it etc et.c basically ur average teen ager.

So earlier this year i started a fire on the loading dock of a stop and shop with my friends, it was stupid, but it was also fun. So the cops caught me and my friends and it freaked me out so much. And now i am paranoid about everything. I really haven't done anything law breaking like, but when ever i see a cop i frak out, whenever i see people doing something wrong when im around them, i have to walk away.
I don't like being this paranoid. Now i always am the one telling people to stop doing things, and walking away from things, not because i really feel its wrong, but because i am so scared of getting caught for doing something wrong.
I know to some extent it is good to have some paranoia, but i have too much i am always worried about getting caught for stuff i didn't even ndo and what not.
I need some help becoming a regular person who can watch someone do something bad and realise its alright im not doing it : /.

bluesharpist101~
IMO you probably feel paranoid because you have a guilty conscious about what you did.I am curious;you think being a normal person consists of the ability to be around people doing bad things?Maybe your conscious is telling you that you need to stop putting yourself in these unhealthy and dangerous situations..So IMO your best bet would be to "listen to you gut",and then maybe you will begin to feel like a "normal'person again

Guys, you are not talking about paranoia-thank God. It's a phobia that can come as a result of traumatic experiences such as yours with cops. Paranoia is a hell's state of mind which can be dealt with only with medications. I'm not a psychiatrist, but I know some basic differences.

I agree, what he has is a phobia.....that's an irrational fear of something, right? He described how he was feeling as being paranoid,so I addressed the problem as such

Your problem sounds more like a conditioning reflex than a phobia. Remember Pavlov's dogs in Psychology 101? The same thing appears to apply here.

What most likely happened is you associated the freaked out feelings with the cops catching you *and* the bad experience. You saw a cop, those feelings came right back. You see somebody else do something "bad" - whatever that may be - you get those feelings again and want to get out of the situation. You anchored the bad feelings to the cop and the situation, and now when you're presented with one of those things, you get the feelings right back.

How to fix it? If you gradually spend more time around what makes you anxious, the feelings will eventually dissipate and disappear. It's as simple as that.

Again, you are not caused to be paranoid becouse this state of brain comes as a result of a psychotic episode, which is a chemical disfunction of the brain.
You can say that you are "on the edge" of feeling "touchy" or "freaked out",
but not truly paranoid.

Be willing to forgive yourself for what you did -- you didn't know better at the time. Be willing to forgive the cops, they're just doing their job.

Be willing to forgive everyone and everything. The many fears that come up (in general) are unconscious fears/guilt of retribution for what you did to others. By forgiving everyone and everything, that fear/guilt eventually diminishes.

It takes some serious inner work to get over many of these things, so keep persevering If you're on a spiritual pathway, it would also help a lot.
