2012 end of world?

People have been prophesizing the end of the world for many, many, many years now. What makes this prediction special? Is there at least a cool doom?

I read that through sheer coincidence... sometime in 2012, every single person in the world will fart at the same time and it will blow planet earth to smithereens...

It the end of the Maya calender. Some people think that the Maya people thought about when the world will end and were so kind to let their calender end at that date.

Nice. There's been more than a few people who also did stuff to the Bible to find hte date of the end of the world. Big bust that was. So they said, "Ooops, we made a mistake. The REAL doomsdate is x." Bust again, if I recall correctly.

Most predictions about the end of the world strike me as silly.

But for some reason, I find it oddly compelling that Isaac Newton predicted the end of the world would happen in the year 2060.

First, the fact that the prophecy came from Isaac Newton is very intriguing, since his theories form the backbone of certain fields in modern science.

Secondly, the fact that Isaac Newton declared that the end of the world would take place long after his own death is not typical of prophecies of this nature, which are typically made within the lifetime of the prophet (to create panic and sell books, methinks).

I'm not saying I think the world will end in 2060. But if I'm still around, I'll keep an eye out. :-)

many people think the poles will reverse, as this as happened before and is now due,this will cause huge earthquakes and floods, the mayons say on earth there will be a new dimention were people will be at one with no wars just peace ,intrestingly a guy called dennis mckenna did some research on this and came up with the same date! He took some dna froma substance and got a time line of earth ending 2012!

Since when does Dec-21-1012 mean the world is going to end? Enough with linear time! Nothing in the Mayan calendar is linear. It simply means the current long count calendar is coming to completion and a new one will start. The end of this long count coincides with our solar system coming in-line with the milky way's galactic equator and is thus an end of a "world age" and the start of a new one. (It should be mentioned around 2012 is the approximate start of the new Hindu Golden Age.) Why is the galactic equator thing important? Because our solar system isn't apart of the milky way galaxy, so we're not naturally attuned to its gravity, EMF, etc. Starting this November through the end of Dec-2012 we should supposedly start feeling the effects of this energy shift as our solar system is brought into the main arm of the milkly way. What exactly will happen? I have no clue, perhaps nothing our five senses will experience.

Nothing is going to happen in 2012...it's just like going to be any other year. There are going to be catastrophes here and there but not one that would destroy the entire human race. How come nothing happened in the year 2000?? Does the Earth itself REALIZE that "oh it's the year 2012...damn...I think it's time for me to blow up!!!"......this is just ridiculous.

First out-of-control dinosaurs, now this... I call for an international ban on dna from substances. And let's get CSI here to figure out who made the world end in 2012 by looking at the "substance"!

The mayan calendar doesn't carry a lot of weight either... what does it mean that it "ends"? If it's based on a number sequence (as many calendars are, since few people want to come up with names for 1000 years) that can't end, so what you really mean is that they predicted the end of the world would be in 2012. If they're that good at prediction why didn't they survive?

2012 hmmm one of my favorite topics. I don't think it will be the end of the world but it will be the end of a very long cycle but as one cycle finishes another one begins.

That rule, if I understand right, is actually a myth. Personally, it seems more proper to say 'end up in' than 'end up', but I am merely an English major, not an English teacher.

I heard on one of those Fringe-Fundie sites that the Incan calendar ends on December 25, 2012, implying the return of Jesus on that date.

It's kind of ironic that it's on December 25. So many of these prophecies seem tailored to Western superstitions and mythologies.

The Mayan long count calendar ends on either Dec. 21, 2012 or Oct. 28, 2011, depending upon who you want to believe (McKenna or Calleman). But, the end of the calendar doesn't mean the end of the world, just the end of one era and on to another. For me, I hope we move from homo sapiens to homo illuminous. We desperately need more enlightenment!
