Default Question concerning negative feelings..

Hi,

I have have been 'passivley' practising personal development for the last couple of years but it is only in the last couple of months that i have decided to SERIOUSLY commit myself to improving my life.

I had so much mental garbage running through my head for such a long time that one of goals is to clean up my thinking and take control of my emotions.

The main problem is that i have a certain negative feeling/voice inside me related to my-self image that i am having serious problems controlling.

Every morning I wake up early conciously decide to be happy and do an 'hour of power' (As suggested by Tony Robbins in Get the Edge) i feel wonderful about my life and the world during it and for about half an hour afterwards.

After that, this negative record/feeling (its the only way i can describe it) starts playing in my mind throughout my working day and doesn't stop until i fall asleep. I just can't seem to silence this internal emotion. Its almost like an obsession and drives me round the bend!!

It is something that is really hampering my progress and something i would seriously like to eliminate. Does have anyone have any suggestions?

Default Stinkin Thinkin

In recovery programs this is called 'Stinkin Thinkin'. And it is advised to say a little prayer when this tape starts playing:

'God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.
Amen'

Also, EFT might be a good thing for you. Jack Canfield as well as the physician who developed EFT (I can't remember his name right now), have noted that some people with negative thought patterns could benefit from a bit of help.

Tapping quickly just around your collar bone or the heel of your hand while saying: 'Even though I have this negative tape running in my head, I still completely love and accept myself.'

This works for a lot of things. It is supposed to not only help you feel better immediately, but will give you more 'strength', figuratively and literally, for hours! I too have a problem with negative self talk, and I do this to strengthen my resolve.

I think there is a section on this forum about EFT. You can check it out.

Good Luck and God Bless

Default One more thing....

A friend of mine suffered from intrusive and prolonged unwanted thoughts... particularly repetative and negative ones. Her doctor put her on Celexa, and the intrusive thoughts and worrying stopped within a week, and she was back to her happy, go-lucky self.

Perhaps you should talk to your family physician about it, and ask if he or she can prescribe Celexa to you.

I had a serious problem with these sort of negative thoughts. They went on all day, everyday for years. Sometimes it was so bad that it felt almost like they were somebody else's thoughts invading my brain. (Though I know they were actually my own.)

The way I got them under control and nearly eliminated them completely was to replace them. (Trying to stop them did not work.)

I started with simple arguments. When a negative thought came into my head, I'd either disagree directly with it (offering up an opposing thought) or I would purposefully think a positive thought. (That positive thought can be virtually anything. Even benign things like, "I like the color green," or a short thought about a happy memory will work fine.) Either way, in effect it sort of made me ignore the original negative thought and it lost a teeny bit of power.

Needless to say, I spent a great deal of time with this the first few days or so. But the negative thoughts showed their weakness earlier on than I had imagined they would. After an amazingly short period of time, I had clear evidence that this was working (10,000 negative thoughts a day went down to 5000, etc) and that gave me confidence and momentum.

The nicest thing is that it's free, painless, takes no real time, and looking for positive thoughts has some really great side effects on life in general.
