How to develop my abilities? I want to prove everyone wrong Hi As I told you, I am 25 and have lost 6 years, which have destroyed me. I know everyone seem to have enjoyed my BIG fall and I really feel unable to study to focus. I totally lost my focus but want to regain my lost strength. COuld you please give some options? |
Some supporting information would be very helpful. What sorts of abilities are you looking to develop? What were you doing these past 6 years that you consider to be wasted time? What sorts of options are you interested in? |

First, solve your depression problem. Then, solve your academic issues. I think law is a depressive career (you have to argue and argue....). Your depression may return if you engage in it. But if you insist, you can start by learning about Critical Thinking and Logic. Go to debate forums and discuss issues, especially moral issues. Learn to separate your arguments from yourself. If you've lost an argument, it doesn't mean you are useless or anything. It means you are human. (To err is human, to forgive, divine.) As for literature, try and read as much as literature as you can. Write summaries about what you've read. Connect one piece of literature with another piece. Practice the type of writing you are interested in the most. Find your unique expression. Make it a habit to write something for 15 minutes, every day. There's someone who become a bigshot lawyer, and one of his strategies was simply the practice of writing for 1 hour a day. If you are actually already in an academic course then I suggest that you learn to manage your time. |

When people fall short of accomplishing what they want, it's sometimes because, for whatever reason, they got lazy and didn't do enough, or go far enough, or they quit too soon. Work is the key. People naturally want to conserve energy, to be lazy when they think they can afford to. And granted, everyone needs a little time to rest and relax. A little, but not too much!! At the time he told me this years ago, it was because he was hiding something illegal he shot on the hunting trip and was working hard to bury it so he wouldn't be caught. He told me that the reason people get caught is because they get lazy and don't hide well enough, the evidence. He buried it so deep, I don't even think the devil could find it. Okay, so the setting around how I learned that lesson wasn't that good, but I never forgot it. |
I'll try to contribute some thoughts for you. First for your depression, this is really something that should be helped by a professional who is trained to help people with these issues. You would do the right thing by first speaking to your own doctor who can then refer you to somebody who would be best suited to help you. Trying to manage this on your own is just inadequate in many cases. As for the studying, my study habits video has helped thousands of students so you should be able to take away some points from it as well. Then adopt an effective study habit to help maximize your grades. Then as for your reference in 'everybody' who is sort of happy to see you fail, I have an entire article to help you manage how others think about you. If they are people who truly want to see you fail, then you should not associate yourself with them in the first place. Get a better group of people to hang with. Hope all of these will help. |
I haven't read any of the above replies so forgive me if I repeat what has already been said. In my experience, the desire to prove something to other people is strong. However, the desire to prove something to oneself needs to be stronger. If you focus on proving to yourself that you can do it and take the other people out of the equation, you're halfway there already. It's all about you. |

Also, make sure that you talk with other people also. The ability to make bonds with other people goes a very long way in any career. Since your main anxiety seems to be about your career I would say the more good friends you have the better will be your ability to cope with things as you always have someone to get help from or discuss issues with. This helps you in the real learning which happens on the fly in any career. |
