I have heard that there is height discrimination in China. I seem to recall a story where a lawyer couldn't get a job because he was too short. I think he sued and won. Why is height such a big deal in China? What does it mean to be short? Are woman discriminated against on the basis of height just as much as men?

I'm 5'3"-5'-4". I'm pretty awesome already, but if I had a few more inches, I'd be unstoppable.

I think physical appearance is taken into consideration, consciously or not, everywhere in the world when it comes to interviews (there's data out there on how much each extra cm of height is worth in terms of salary). But business practices in East-Asian countries tend to be a lot more upfront about these things. There are jobs here (Korea) that are explicitly for Westerners, and the more Western you look, the better, as you will be put on show as the token white guy. Being blond, blue-eyed and tall will make you all the more employable.

Yes women as well as men are discriminated because of their height...
I guess there's no logical explanation, it's part of their cultural standards of beauty as well as having round eyes, double-fold eyelid an pale skin (women carry umbrella on sunny and rainy days)... Discrimination and prejudices of all kind are almost "normal" in China...It's often a way to select candidates, during the medical examination to become a civil servant, women got their height, distance between eyes and bust size measured...Guess why...

I'm not tall (5"7') but I dont think I would change my height...
Look at that: Short people could live longer - Telegraph

The highest I ever measured myself so far was 5'6 which is the height I was at 16. I do not regard that number as acceptable. It can be changed.

seriously? smdh.

my apologies in advance for what i'm about to say being so very 'un-enlightened' but -- imho that is just ridiculous. stupid, even.

LMFAO at the notion that a person's height has anything to do with their value, effectiveness, or attractiveness in the world... it's laughable! Manufacturing non-existent barriers is just another way that some human beings will 'make up' ANYTHING with which to exclude others, look down upon them, and deem them 'less than' .... petty trivial things that have absolutely NO bearing on the content of their character, nor their skills, work ethic, or value as a person.

I am a short woman (5'2). I used to have a huge complex about it growing up with the unrelenting teasing from kids at school, plus my parents' obsession over height and how much i ate (or lack of i should say) didn't help. Oh and i was a late starter. My puberty growth spurt didn't kick in until i was 14? Or 15? I can't remember.

However, as i have gotten older, i've learned to be comfortable with my height and just accept it. It helps seeing plenty of other people my stature (i must have gone to a school full of tall kids).

I don't like surgery of any kind, so i can't see myself going that route. But if height enhancement could theoretically be achieved without pain, hassle, expense, inconvenience, then i might consider it then

I'm 4'11 Male, and I'm content with my height. I feel that I was given this height for a reason, but that's just me
