Default Have you tried light therapy to deal with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder)?

Hey gang,

So, I tend to go into a deep depression every winter. Not a "the world sucks" kind of depression, but very ineffective, and just don't feel like doing anything. At all.

I've heard about light therapy before, and wanted to get some feedback from any that may have tried it. Oh, if you haven't tried it directly, second-hand knowledge works fine as well (meaning if you know someone that's tried it).

Come on, talk to me!

I have not tried it but I worked with a colleague years ago who found it greatly effective. I have made use of exposing my skin to the sun during the winter to receive the daily Vitamen D requirements. I once found a website that calculated how much daily exposure was needed based on the hour of the day and the latitude and longitude of your location.

Vitamen D (one that can be well absorbed) might be as effective as the light treatment. I have not read about studies comparing the two.

Second what GreekDog said.

My professor (Psych doctor and Nurse with 25 yrs of experience in mental health) says that she doesn't feel her best in the winter and sits under a light for about 20 minutes. She recommends it to those who get down in the winter.

I bought a light therapy lamp for my cousin a few years before, as she was suffering from SAD. I don't know if she's used it much, but she's travelling for a few months now and I'm babysitting the lamp for her. I used it for 30 min yesterday while meditating, it was pretty awesome! If you close your eyes it feels like you're sitting in the sun (provided it's warm in your room). I think it enhanced my meditation too.
