The only way that I know to stop negative thinking is to unrelentingly replace those negative thoughts with positive ones. You can only think one thought at a time. If you flood your mind with positive thoughts, you don't leave room (or time) for the negative ones. With practice, you create a new habit.

I had a serious problem with negative thinking at one time. I did it all day, every day, and I was miserable. Using this method literally changed my life.

Whenever I had a negative thought (at first, whenever I had a thought!) I looked around and found something - anything - that I could think a positive thought about. ("I love that shade of blue." "That cat is cute." "I have all ten fingers.") Doesn't matter how big or small it is, if it's got a positive slant, it will work. Sometimes, when I wasn't feeling very creative, I'd repeat a positive thought over and over again.

After a short while, I gained momentum because I started noticing slight changes in the way I felt. I felt a little better, so it got a little easier to find positive thoughts. With practice, I replaced a negativing thinking habit with a positive thinking habit.

One other thing that really helped me was to start a gratitude list. Write down ten things a day that you have to be grateful for. This also helps with ideas for positive thoughts when you're having difficulty thinking of things.

Best of luck to you. This change could have a huge impact on your life. Congratulations for taking the first step.

If you are truly serious about this… here is what you do…

You create a compelling future for yourself… that is… you sit down and write the things that you want to have… the achievements that you want to realize… the person that you want to become… the experiences that you want to live etc…

Next… you set up strategies to achieve and accomplish those things…

Finally… you take MASSSIVE ACTION to turn that dream into reality…

You do that… and you will never have a negative thought in your head ever… trust me…

I have gone from being quite negative to very positive. My 2 tips:

1. Work on your self confidence/ self esteem. Get fit, take care of yourself, build friendships, etc. You want to get to a stage where you are happy with yourself and your life.

2. Like Shamou said, how you think about the future will have a big impact on your current state of mind. It makes a huge difference when you become excited about what lies ahead and genuinely believe that things will work out for you.

Best of luck.

That would work all right, but it sounds exhausting! (Oops! Uh... this couch is comfy? )

Great post! I'm going to start trying the immediate positive thought idea as of now. The art on the computer game boxes covering my room sure does look cool...
