| How can I stick to one of the goals? I think my goal is to serve the most highness, to experience the being of my life and enjoy the experience. And I hope to contribute my energy to the universe. But it's easy for me to switch my insterests? For example, I think I should do sth to help the needed people today. But several days later I probably have some other idea that I 'd better focus on my own study in college. I began to learn a foreign language last two weeks, and I found I stopped it unconsciously this week. I just cannot stick to one goal all the time. My mind changes every day and I am not aware of it. |
| |||
| I have that problem too. I just group all those "goals" that I try to achieve into one big general goal. So one day i may decide to help someone, the next I may learn a bit of spanish, then give up on the third and do something else. I just group all these things into a general "happiness" goal so I don't feel too bad when I change what I am doing. I do have other set goals though, which I rarely change because there are some external consequences to changing them. |
| |||
| Go with the flow Goals are helpful to focus intent in a specific direction, but what is even more important is to distinguish which goals are essential and which are non-essential. Every time my awareness goes up, I realize that all the goals I had a few months ago were actually not what I really want, and I make a new list of goals, rinse and repeat. Eventually I realized that it was pointless to keep goals anymore, and I should just focus on increasing awareness itself and go where life leads me. This actually sounds like what you said in your main goal, so I think you're on the right track. |
| |||
| Welcome to the human race... Besides: isn't it important that overall you are still aiming for the same 'general' goal eventhough you might swirve a bit getting there, taking some sidesteps, along the way? isn't that all the fun? |
| |||
| Its not a bad thing that you change your goals a lot. Many intelligent people are that way. Its natural to lose interest and become curious in something else. Don't worry about the goals themselves, just make sure you have a guiding principal that forms all your goals in the your first place and you be just fine.

| You are forgetting something that will drive you hte "WIIFM" drive common to all humans (Whats In It For Me?). Serving the greater good is a non-event. You will never get excited about it, jsut ask the factory workers under Soviet control before the Berlin Wall came down. You aer never going to stick with a goal until you actually find what lights your fire. personally I want ot help retarded children and the blind dogs association plus providing basic medical care to some poorer countries but none of these are my goals - these are parts of what I will do when I hit it big. I want MONEY and FREEDOM. Now that's what floats my boat. FAME comes in well there too. Being a professional actor is the only job I can do. Anything else and I would wallow in sorrow all day because I know how good life could be if I "followed my bliss" AND NO successful people do not change their goals all the time. Successful people chase their goals though thick and thin and never waver. Change you goal and you have given up. The only way to loose in life is to give up.

| I have the answer. These are the steps: 1. Get some sheets of metal from a hardware store. 2. Get a welding machine. 3. Get a blowtorch. 4. Weld a closed metal box out of the sheets of metal. 5. Use the blowtorch to make a slit in the box just big enough for some paper documents. 6. Draft a will that says the box cannot be opened until your death and that at that time your goals must be read aloud during your funeral. 7. Whenever you set a goal that you truly intend on keeping, slide it into the box.

I've decided a while ago that this is my life's purpose: 'I am the most influential lightworker of the 21st century' It initially was simply 'I am the most influential person of the 21st century' until I realised that, to me, Hitler was the most influential person of the 20th century

| mtrimpe: Combine it with the Common Good? What is the Common Good? Why do I care about everyone else really? No I mean is "the Common Good" going to get you living borderline poverty line for 20 years - going to the gym everyday, training your guts out, spending your free time trying to chase the next job, worrying about money continually because my chosen career precludes me from regular income, joining the army, moving to Asia to gain additional experience, learning several different fight styles, eating a very strict diet and eating every two hours? How about the "Common Good" help me out and give me some cash to get make my dreams come true - give value to get value. My answer and everyone elses answer to the above is NO. I put myself through a life of extreme difficulty so that at the end I get the rewards for the effort that I put in. It is only the potential payout that drives me everyday, even when I feel like tossing it in and getting a job. When I hit my goals I can help the charities that I like but it doesn't get me up in the morning.

You should have MANY goals. Eg lifetime goals; 10-year goals; 5-year goals; 1-year goals; monthly goals; weekly goals; daily goals. Academic goals; fitness goals; spiritual goals; family goals; financial goals etc. And recognise that you won't be pursuing all goals with equal energy, enthusiasm or effort, at the same time. Eg if your exam is tomorrow, your top goal for today would probably be to study for the exam. Not to help needy people. What you should have - is enough goals, to constantly occupy you in the here and now. If you're bored, you're not living. Go live! Find something to do. And make it a meaningful something. That's why you need to consciously choose and set your goals. Otherwise your "something" will probably be along the lines of plonking yourself in front of the TV and wasting your life away. Then when your time on Planet Earth is over, and your whole life is flashing before your eyes, all you're gonna see is past episodes of "Survivor" or "Friends". Or worse - the Paris Hilton show. |

I agree with Acting Like Godot completely and I think it is great advice but there is lots of great here that I am sure will not only help you but anyone who may read this thread. I am one of those who is lacking in the goal setting and goal reaching department. Its probably the reason I have been feeling down and out the last couple of weeks.
