Beside freeing up 1 or 2 hours of my time a day. I still feel depressed but for different reasons. Instead of feeling depressed about whats going on in the world I feel depressed about whats going on in my life or whats not going on in my life. but at least I have more control over my life then the world. You do see too often that the news is based around the idea of showing what is compelling to viewers. That was is compelling and interesting is most of the time....negative. Terrible world we live in. |

| haha dont worry....just like Scott i have stopped watching the news ( a while ago) Its strange when you talk to parents, or people who are used to getting up every morning and reading the daily paper or watching the daily news who are conditioned to believe that they HAVE to keep up to date with the negativity of the world. Theres a big difference between knowing news such as what goes on in the world economy and the news tha,t a father came home to his house to find his wife and kids tied up by a burglar and he knocked him unconscious in self defence....and he is now in prision. |

We are hard wired to notice danger if you don't stop to smell the roses nothing bad will happen but if you don't notice the saber tooth tiger you could become dead very quickly. there so much time and energy waited on thing we have so little or no control over. I don't know how long I will go without news but I don't miss it at all. I'm trying to find new healthy ways to cope with my feelings. Last edited by scotthegeek; 02-05-2010 at 08:42 PM. |

My take on it is that **** happens in the world all the time but the important stuff just gets glossed over by the news. Turn on CNN and you get a lot of content with little substance. Everything is a soundbite-if it doesn't make a good soundbite it doesn't get any airtime. If you wanna be scared into inactivity the news is your drug of choice but if you wanna get off your ass and do something you need to educate yourself about what's going on in the world.

It's a misnomer anyway, IMHO I think of it more as the accident and disaster report. I want happy news! I quite like seeing things like, "Man has fun with Slave in Public Shopping Mall on Monday Morning", or "Beautiful Day in Wellington NZ today for the Rugby 7's: Wellingtoninans Delight in their Waitangi Day Celebrations" or "Ever Since Jenny's nose surgery on Wednesday she's been playing the piano with more gay abandon than ever: husband astounded!" I think these are all very news-worthy items how about this: start your own "news" channel? Find the happy stuff! Cheers, Jenny. |

The news is junk food of the mind. It's designed to center people's attention on things outside their circle of power (themselves and their immediate surroundings) so they are powerless and feed power elsewhere, too distracted to take control of themselves. This is deep programming and extends to a lot more than just news and other media, but also to how we deal with each other.

This is how I see it also. It's like some wierd vouyeristic source of entertainment almost, and people almost instantly forget what they have just watched as soon as they've watched it...unless it comes up in conversation, in which case they can all speculate and give their emotively based oppinions, which do no good whatsoever to the situation. It's junk food for the mind and pollution as well keeping people down and from living their potential. My housemates are constantly reading the newspaper and watching the news, and I just avoid them...they're so filled with the neg. Quote:

I have too and it is amazing how much better I feel before going to bed. I know people who are literally addicted to watching it all day long. And I always get to hear about the main things that are going on. My Mum will always call me if there is something I really need to know about. Alison |

Although I like to be in the loop and would consider my old self a news junky, I evenutally found reading the news too draining to read first thing in the morning. To combat this, I now read the newspaper from back to front. My front page of the newspaper is always a car ad or new homes, then it moves to horoscopes, recipes, entertainment, sports, business, editoral then the news. If it's a slow news day, I make make it to the front page with terrible headlines or graphic pictures. This works out well for me, as it gives my mind a chance to adjust to the fluffy stuff first thing then as I continue to read it becomes more newsworthy. Eventually I will give up news altogether. |

I think the news itself has no power of it's own. By avoiding it because you think it's negative, it's sort of counterproductive to your purpose of posting this. By giving up the time to focus on something "happier", that's almost hiding. Productivity would be using the news to obtain wisdom. Watch each negative story and learn something from it. It is my opinion that wisdom is seeing no evil. You've been reading for the what's and not the why's, hereinlies why youre depressed, you take the same menality the bad news taught you and let it rule your life. |

What really bothers me about "the news" is how much of it is comprised of "celebrity news"... Ack! May the gods bring me home right now if Madonna's latest adoption or brangelina's marital woes really qualify as something I'm willing to devote even 30 seconds of my life to! Another reflection of the sad state of affairs on this plane... People so dissatisfied and in need of escapism that the lives of strangers will always take precedence... I suspect they become that way by watching too many news broadcasts...

I don't think you can really hide form the news because you will hear about things form other people. I think that if you want to learn, the news is not the best place for it because it focus on sound bits and if they show both side of an issue both sides have there facts or spin and you do not know what to believe. I think you can learn more from books and by talk to people that have live in other countries. most of the news focus to much on the US. News is not all bad I gave money to Haiti and I'm concerned about climate change so I'm a member of the green party of Canada. but I would have know about there issues with out the news. I seen a study that show people who watch less news are more happy. if you are more happy your less stress and if there is less stress. you will be more healthy. call me crazy but it you want to save money on health care watch less news. there is only 24 hour in a day you have to set priordity you can't do everything. everyone different. I'm trying new things, Have you try going without news before? Scott Last edited by scotthegeek; 02-08-2010 at 04:45 AM.

I totally agree with not watching news. I get any important information that I need through the people around me. If there is something pressing enough, I will find out about it. I even stopped watching TV. I haven't owned one in over 2 years. I wrote an article about it here. Instead I spend my time reading, writing, learning, and having conversations with friends or family. It's all about replacing the negative habits with something positive and uplifting. ( referring to the comment about still feeling neg ) Anyhow, I'm glad to hear that you've made the switch! |

I am very happy without watching TV and will never go back. I have more time and less negativity in my life. Who wouldn't want that?

Haha, congrats, Scott. Both my dad and my boyfriend have a news addiction. My dad's more of the "doom and gloom" type, while my boyfriend only touches on world news and focuses more on gadgets. Both of them scold me for not paying attention to the news, but I've told them, "If there's anything so important that I have to know it, you'll tell me." Or I'll learn about it somewhere else, like the Haiti earthquake. Besides that, I don't know of world events, because they don't affect me. And if they will, someone will tell me. :P /<3 |
