Default Suggestion for staying positive in a job you can't stand?

I am currently in a job I can not stand. Nothing about the job is terrible (Ie. boss, work load, etc...) I just am not suited for the work I am doing. (IT analyst)

I have battled this quite a long time sticking it out at a job I am not too thrilled about it, but as the days goes by it gets harder and harder to stay positive and keep my integrity up.

Any suggestions from the group on how to keep a positive outlook in a job you work at full time?

So er.... what are you staying for? what is it that you want to do?

some options:

a) create a plan to do what it is you want to do. You might have to stick at the job while you study or get some voluntary experience to have a career change - but knowing you are leaving should help

b) treat it as a development opportunity. What skills can you learn and develop in this job that you can transfer to what ever it is you want to do? Find out and learn them!

c) ask for a transfer to a different department - what else could you do for that company that is close to what you want to do

d) instead of going in miserable, think of ways you can show love to you co-workers and make them happy. How can you inspire them today?

e) think of ways you can manifest the job you want, while you are working in your current job. how much different would it have to be to make you happy then work on attracting those things to you now.

etnie21,

I know that you aren't looking for this kind of answer but please don't stay at a job you hate. My best friend has just died in a car accident at the age of 21 (he was a passenger). You never know how much time you have left. Find what you love and you'll find a way to work on it full-time. Hating a job is a perfect opportunity for this!

Best Regards,
Norbert

Hi etnie21,

I agree with Norbert and Holistic Star. This life is too short to waste time doing work you don't like. You're learning useful things about yourself now. You can use this job experience as a stepping stone to find things you like better which are more consistent with your values and goals.

Take the initiative to ;
1) write down what you like and dislike about what you do now
2) write down your strengths and weaknesses
3) brainstorm where you would like to work and why

Realize that discovering you feel uncomfortable is a very good thing. This is the first step to making changes that enable you to grow and enjoy life more in general.

All the best,
L

Definitely,

I was where you are, and left. It took time, but I made a plan and followed it. I was doing IT project management, and decided to train people in (you guessed it) Project Management, cos I'd been on a PM course and figured the trainer was having more fun than I did at work.

I started that, then learnt EFT. It got me through the last year of working in a place I loathed, then I decided to teach people EFT as well.

My advice to you, make a plan! Once you start moving, the universe (or whatever) will help you get there. "There" may not be where you plan to go, but it will be where you need to be!

And once you make a plan, at least you can justify turning up each day! It's part of your plan!

Joy to you
Hazel

I appreciate the follow up from you all. I have been on the path to understanding myself (self discovery, etc...) I am working with a career coach to identify who, what, where, I am. The challenge is dealing with my current job.

I have asked my coach about this aspect and they haven't been too much help there. (Helpful in a quite a few other ways and I def. benefit from the relationship). I have sought out ways to connect with others, but it just seems to drain me each day. I have temporary things that are keeping me at this job plus the fact of making a rash decesion (quitting) is appealing, it is a warm blanket on a cold night type of thing. Temporary, quitting would be too drastic I feel.

I transferred out of a previous dept. about a year or so ago and it did not get better in this dept. so I am leery of what dept to try next? I am trying to match up skills to what I would be good at, but again it is challenging.

I feel the suggestions above are valuable and I have tried some of them. I am still interested if anyone has other suggestions. Ie. Positive thoughts before going into work to help improve your day, doing some refreshing things over lunch hours, etc...?

Thanks again

I allowed myself to be in that situation longer than I should have. I knew for a while that I had taken a wrong turn and that I needed to move in another direction, but I could not get myself to walk away. I feared regret more than anything. I was at a tech company that was very successful and growing very fast and I was afraid that if I left and it turned into something big I'd regret it.

So the universe took care of what I wouldn't.

I had been asked to take over information strategy reporting to the CFO and within three months my work uncovered serious negligence on his part in managing corporate finances. Two months after that I was offered a severance package to train my replacement.

Be careful about not making changes you know you need to.

Of course, before the end of the same day I a job offer and an offer for business partnership, and before the end of the week I had another of each.

Be careful, but don't be afraid. The universe is benevolent and will take care of you if you're willing to trust it.

I agree with eveyrone else. Life is short and work takes up a big portion of your life. Find another job. In the meantime look at your current job as a stepping stone to a better situation. It is providing you with money while you look for something better.
