I've just discovered an absolute beast inside myself. It is the belief that success is improvement on past performances. I believe I need to get better over time, otherwise I am a failure. Why is this so hideous? Because the better I get, the harder it is to improve, and the more likely it is I will fail!! God damn it, I gave up bloody golf, which is the only sport I've ever excelled at because I stopped improving (visibly) for a year or so. I began to experience the pain of failure, simply because I was failing to improve. I bet if I wasn't giving myself such a hard time and being so depressed and paranoid I would have improved anyway! My standard of success is simply to keep getting better. I always assumed this was really positive but it's actually limiting. Time to get rid of this belief and replace it with: Success is never quitting. Or Success is doing the best I can with the resources I have. Any suggestions here for good rules about what constitutes success? |

I have one I use: Just be the best version of yourself at any given time. Sometimes it is better than me yesterday and sometimes it's not. And it is OK. I was an overachiever and wanted always to be the best and then better and better until one day my body said STOP and I did. The first time I could stop and "smell the roses" was the day I could learn to live again and be happy. Not saying I am happy ALL the time but most of the time YES. |
