Default how to be happy:

i could give you a million dollars. it would bring you only about a month of happiness and afterward your happiness would fall right back down to where it is now.

i could take you out of your life now, and make you a bum with nothing. you would be unhappy for about a month, then your happiness would go right back up to where it is now.

happiness is an illusion, and just a relative feeling designed like all other emotions to control our behavior

meaning no matter how good or bad your life is your happiness will adjust itself to fit into that life.

and then continue to do its trivial little thing:
-like making you unhappy when your life(no matter where it is on the scale) gets a little worse
-and make you happy when your life(no matter where it is on the scale) gets a little better.

comfort level adjusts too! we are comfortable with what we are used to.

we don't know what we like, we only know what we are used to, that's what we say we like.

why seek money if it cant buy happiness?

why seek money if all it does is have me buy things that i think i like coz im used to them? lol

i could be a bum on the street and my comfort and happiness will adjust and ill be just as comfy and happy as someone in a big house they work so hard to maintain.

the poor man laughs at the rich man

coz the poor man is just as comfy and happy as the rich man only the rich man has a big fancy life he has to work hard to maintain in order to be as comfy and happy as the poor man.

the best way to be comfy and happy is to follow your heart not your mind

your mind will have your working your ass off your whole life gaining great riches and comforts which will only burden your comfort and happiness more.

your heart will ignore all that and take you straight to your goal.

There is a difference between the Ego's idea of being happy, which is having the money etc that it thinks will make you complete, and real happiness, which is knowing that you have everything you need right now, and always will. You are happy when you follow your heart because then you want something because you love it but it isn't necessary for your happiness. You can't be really happy when you follow your mind because then you must have something you don't already have in order to feel good about yourself. You are continually searching for something to make you feel better.

Exclamation flip the question around

It's interesting if you flip that question around - and ask what makes us unhappy?
You'll find it's easier to answer!

e.g. sacrificing relationships and health by chasing material gains, never stopping to smell the roses....etc..

You get the idea.

I think we all know that real happiness is about following your heart, as you rightly say.
But the problem is that, while most of us have a theoretical understanding of what brings 'true happiness', few of us take that path.

So the question is why don't we choose to live that way?

Every person knows that happiness is the road with the least resistance. Throwing away all the barriers in front of you and enjoying pure happiness is much easier said than done. That being said, we all have our challenges in life. If you accept your "challenges" in life and don't sacrifice losing yourself then I believe that is the most engaging way to approach real life happiness.

I agree, good post jtracy.

Genuine happiness is not the same as gratification or pleasure. I think many people never make that important distinction. All around me I see people attempting to become happy by absorbing as much pleasure they can, which only increases their attachment to external things, and blinds them to genuine happiness.

There is a higher state of happiness than mere pleasure. It is clear and unmistakable; it reveals vast reservoirs of intuition and intelligence, and it obliterates all problems.

Happiness is about your level of consciousness. Money is a resource and a part of life. The whole of life is about raising your level of consciousness. Problems happen when you consider money to be the whole of life....... anything to be the whole of life. Only the whole is the whole.

Money can help bring you happiness... if it is in harmony with the greater scheme of things

Bingo
you said it right to follow the Heart.

in my opinion happiness is a cause not an effect.

It's nice to challenge yourself and succeed though. Having a really easy life is boring, let's be honest. It's satisfying to know the going got tough, and you pulled through anyway.
