Default The Mindful Way Through Depression (I highly recommend this book)

Hi all,

I highly highly highly recommend this book, published within this past year. It is authored by 4 scientists working in the field of psychology and neuroscience, and comes with an extremely useful audio CD of 8 different exercises to do.

While the book is about depression generally, the information contained is incredibly useful for anyone struggling with any sort of negative thoughts, who feels their life isn't going the way they want it to, and for people who have a hard time connecting with their emotions. The first half is a wonderful and informative introduction to the practice of mindfulness, and the second half concentrates on specific exercises you can do, culminating in an 8-week self-mindfulness course (which, of course, is the point of the thing - can't grow and heal if we don't put the effort in).

The crux of the book, and the theory behind mindfulness, is to stop running from our emotions, to try and befriend both our thoughts and feelings. People get into mental ruts and emotional ruts because of the natural tendency of "aversion" - running from what we are feeling and thinking. The mindfulness approach teaches us to accept whatever it is we are feeling, to get back in touch with ourselves, slowly, over the course of weeks and weeks by doing simple exercises every day.

and no, I am not in any way affiliated with this book, but using its advice, I have seen the beginnings of healing and growth within myself even in these last 3 weeks. I'm more than happy to answer questions!!

Peace y'all

This is a beautiful book. I highly recommend it, too. Heads and shoulders above other books on either mindfulness OR depression. Can't say enough good about it!
