Let me try to generalize the lifestyles as general as possible. The 'Pleasure' lifestyle The 'Political' lifestyle The 'Theoretical' lifestyle Now let me give you three stereotypes who are living each lifestyle. The party guy is definitely living the pleasure lifestyle. Then, we can surely say all political bastards are living the political lifestyle. Finally, all those geeky professors can be counted as living life theoretically. Now remember that the point is not to say which one is better, but what you choose and why! By the way, these are all extreme lifestyles, meaning that we have tons of people are too confused to choose. |

Pleasure for me. It just makes soooo much sense. Im not agreeing that it is the "party guy" lifestyle though. We all take pleasure from different things in life. Some people might take pleasure from politics, others from theorizing. Why would anyone ever choose a life that wasn't pleasurable to them somehow?

By pleasure I mean bodily pleasure, physical pleasure. Things like sex, pot and like that. That's why I described it as a party guy. Now of course those doing politics and theorizing love what they do, but it's not exactly the same thing as physical pleasure. |

Theoretical. I could never imagine myself doing something else, I take great pleasure in reading, thinking up theories and teaching. I am crazy enough to regard philosophical ideas as immensely important And I do agree with Bacon on knowledge ... Nam et ipsa scientia potestas est. |

Am I allowed to choose more than one? I think that it is important to "have it all" meaning not to have to choose between one or the other but instead to have both I think physical pleasure is important, because I figure God gave us bodies for a reason, which was to enjoy them (to me this would not include things, like taking pot, which are bad for our bodies). But I also think theoretical ideas are important too. If we never used our minds, we would never make improvements in our life and our world. I too love to think, to use creativity in making improvements and solving problems. I have learned that I would make a lousy politician because I have no interest in pleasing other people more than myself. I am not very diplomatic, I tend to call things as I see them. So the Political Lifestyle is not for me. |

Nobody is 100% one and not the other. Geeky professors do things that are fun. Politicians are geeky when they research their supporters' interests, trends, polls, whatever. And no matter what your profession is, who doesn't enjoy a little pleasure?
