Unhappy Trying my hardest

I consider myself a very caring person. I always tell myself never to judge others, to listen to people when they talk to me, and to be as nice as possible at all times. Yet, I find myself not doing this and when they tell me their opinions, I sometimes assume automatically that they are wrong and shut my listening down to think of how I will argue with them. I think I am realizing that I always think I am right and I cannot just sit back and listen to others. I am making myself sound worse than I am but I guess I just want to know if there is anything I can do to change my perception. I think making myself aware of what I am doing is the first step but I cannot really get past that. I am a pretty busy person between taking classes and exercising, along with the other activities of life. I have a very big family but am not around people all of the time like I used to be since I am away at college now. I included these last details in case they had anything to do with my viewpoints. I am just hoping to be a non-judgemental all-caring guy. Not as in acting but in a genuine way. I hope this makes sense to all of you.
