Default Therapy was dumb...

Today was a little better...

I got out of the house to see some old-co-workers and I have plans for tonight, but as far as my therapy session went, I feel like I would have made better use of my time staring at the wall. It was about as useful as watching paint dry.

Howso? Maybe not the right therapist or just the fact that it was the first session has something to do with it?

Are you going to give up on it just like that?

My first session of therapy was like that as well. Typically the first session is mostly background, getting to know the person. You don't really get into it and start making progress for a few weeks.

This was typical "breathing excercises" thing a ma jig. Big Deal! How does that help me in my actual life? A few breathing excercises won't cure what is causing me to be depressed, or to help me to know what to do to turn my life around.

The reason why I am depressed is because of my unknowingness what to do about anything in my life. This uncertainty is what leads to everything else... the symptoms. But symptoms are not the cure. Obviously my thinking is a bit shady. But when your whole life is just a whopper of a train wreck, how do you know what to do? I have lived my life so haphazardly...

Again, that was the first session. I am sure there is more to it. Or perhaps just a different therapist is in order. How do you know what will help you turn your life around until you actually give it a real try and a real chance to work?

Breathing is the only thing you do in all aspects of your life. Doing it well is possibly the most important thing you can do for yourself.

Tell your therapist that you didn't like the style of the last session, and then describe to him/her what you would like your therapy sessions to give you.
If your therapist does not conform to your needs, ask him/her to suggest another therapist who might specialize in the style you want.
Don't be afraid to speak up!

GASP!!

You clearly do not understand what you are saying.

I am going to let you in on a secret. Breathing is magic. Mankind has discovered this in so many different ways.

Breathing is a key element in yoga; qigong; falungong; meditation; various hypnotic techniques; various stress management techniques; many martial arts .......

Buddha attained enlightenment by doing a form of meditation involving observing his own breath.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has been invited to give the United Nations General Assembly on the topic of how to breathe.

Qigong, the ancient Chinese art of breathing, develops in advanced practitioners not only attributes like spiritual development; emotional well-being; great physical vigour etc,

but also paranormal abilities as shown in this video:

What sort of therapy is it?

Is it the psychotherapy approach, where the therapist sits at your head and you lie on the couch.

Ot is it the Clinet Centered Therapy? where you talk more and the therapist just listens?

Learning to work with your breath to relieve stress can be a powerful tool to have within you.

If you're open to having breathing exercises you can practice on your own, but still with guidance, I can strongly Belleruth Naparstek's Panic Attacks Guided Imagery audio program.

I just picked up the Panic Attacks CD after listening to a sample on her website. The first three tracks deal with breathwork and I found the whole program extremely helpful. They help build-up relaxation and self-regulation skills

The first track focuses on conscious breathing alone. In 1-2-3, Out 1-2-3.
The second track adds a mantra to the breathwork. I breath in peace, I breath out calm. I am peaceful, I am calm, I am at ease.
The third track adds body awareness to the breathwork. You breath into all the areas of your body.
The fourth track is a powerful guided imagery meditation. It helps to face and embrace difficult episodes and helps reduce their frequency and intensity.
The fifth track has affirmations.

This is the link for the Panic Attacks CD. If you go to listen to audio sample on this page, it brings up two samples of the guided imagery meditation. Her audio programs are also available on Amazon.

Health Journeys - Product Detail

There's a free 15 minutes guided imagery meditation you can download to try now. It's from the Relieve Stress audio program.

they didn't help anyway, right?

Have you considered going to an AA meeting or AL-ANON? I don't think you have to be a alcoholic per say to go to those places.

I know someone that went to AL-ANON, even though his parents weren't all out drunks.

It would confront a lot of stuff for you to be in a group like that, but maybe be like free consoling. And also take you out of your story some when listening to others in the group go off about what they are there for.
