Default Thinking of emigrating to Canada...

Thinking about the future quite a bit lately, not just personally but as to where we live as a family and where I want to be going forward. It's about quality of life and all that.

I've not given this a great deal of thought but it has crossed my mind a few times over the years. It's happening more often now so I've decided to do a little research.

With some fairly random searching I found one place over there on a lakeside that had 6 bedrooms and was truly beautiful. It only cost about £130k! I'll need a job of course but I'm thinking that now is the time to think a bit differently and make a fresh start anyway. Too much baggage over here now.

I'm in graphic design, marketing and PR. I'm the writer/editor/designer of the company magazine and I'm writing a lot of articles generally these days too - I enjoy that. I'm in the Internet industry though I'm not technical minded and I've done travel and insurance. It sounds laughable but I do a bit of life coaching on the side as well...not that I'm paid for it but I do have a qualification.

This are all options for the future, certainly at the beginning

I was thinking of locating on the East side of the country, anywhere from Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick. I know a couple of people in NB so that may be worth pursuing. I like the snow but I don't want anything too extreme. I've got to be able to get about as I can't drive for medical reasons.

So now it's your turn - try and persuade me to either leave the UK or move to Canada.

Hubby and I have been talking about moving to Canada. We had our astrocartography done, but I don't remember what parts of Canada were most favorable for us. There have also been fleeting dreams of moving to Norway or Denmark. We're currently in Chicago.

A place near a lake with 6 bedrooms sounds divine. I live in a condo building with a private beach for Lake Michigan, but it's always been a dream to have my own house near a lake or river.

It would certainly be an adventure for you and your family. I'm from Northern Minnesota which I think is pretty similar land wise to Canada. It certainly is beautiful.

I can't try and persuade you, but I can wish you the best in your journey

Come to Canada. We're practically socialists. Free healthcare, low crime, low population, a decent economy. For your kind of work, you might want to be located near metropolitan areas like Toronto or something. Try applying to jobs online and see what kinda job availability you get, or you could do some sort of online stuff. I dunno, that's your deal to figure it out.

Its awesome. Come come come come come. The only thing is the wild winters in the east end. They're still pretty ok near lakes (the lake effect milds weather), but if you get farther away it gets harder to deal with that. You might want to come here for a visit. I dunno how much a plane ticket is over there but you might be able to get one for around 500 dollars canuck, so maybe half in pounds? I dunno the exchange rate.

Depending on where you are, lots of multi-culturalness and stuff. I dunno what you enjoy. Museums? The ROM is one of the best in the world. Paintballing? Indoor paintballing here too. We've got an awesome culture, too, generally pretty nice and polite. Even if you bump into someone, they apologize. So, come on down.

Come to Canada! I agree with RT Wolf – for your line of work Toronto or Montreal may be your best bets, and we do have "free healthcare, low crime, low population, a decent economy"... and Toronto is very multicultural, with Chinatown, Little Italy, the Danforth (Greektown), and more. Events vary greatly, from concerts at Roy Thompson Hall, to shows at our new opera house; displays at the Royal Ontario Museum and interactive activities and IMAX theatres at the Ontario Science Centre. People are polite. We've also got the TTC for transit, and GO buses for travelling out of town.

But if the smog gets you down, go to New Brunswick or any maritime province. Québec is big on old architecture, and more "free-spirited" than Toronto. You might also want to consider the province of Alberta out west. It's economy is blossoming, people are making so much money out there, and for your occupation, that might be a wise choice.

Good luck!

as a self centered American who naturally assumed you live here also I was going to say "do it yesterday!". But then I realized you are from the UK in which case my answer is "no you will be too close to America".

I met a guy who migrated from India to Canada, there are few requirements but you need a grade and some money. It takes few months to get approved.

Some requirements:
Quote:
* You have at least one continuous year of full-time, paid work experience or the equivalent in part-time continuous employment.
* Your work experience must be Skill Type 0 (managerial occupations) or Skill Level A (professional occupations) or B (technical occupations and skilled trades) on the Canadian National Occupational Classification (NOC).
* You must have had this experience within the last 10 years.
Immigrating to Canada: Skilled workers and professionals
