Default What's it like having high EQ?

Hi all this is my first post so here goes:

I've have read a thread "What is it having high IQ?" and came up with this topic.

Since many have placed emphasis on EQ then IQ lately and I've read reports that those having high EQ are more likely to succeed in life. Therefore, can someone share his/her experience.

Wouldn't that be EIQ? :S I think you're right though.

I probably have a really low 'EQ', I fail to see how having a high EQ could be better than having a high IQ though.

A high EQ consists as both having empathy towards others and as well having good self awareness and self discipline.

I believe EQ is emotional intelligence. I read about how EQ may surpass IQ too. From my reading, people with great academic results (high IQ) may not necessarily perform well in real work place. On the other, people who don't score too well in exam, perform so much better at work if they have this EQ thing.

I may be wrong but what i know is this:

EQ has much to do with how we manage our emotion. It's much like we control our emotion rather than being controlled by our emotion. For example when we fail to deliver during certain task, how do we respond to it. Do we point fingers at others, feel low and apologetic and let people poke fun at us, or do we pick ourselves up quickly, acknowledge our mistake, move on and learn better along the way.

I think EQ has a lot to do with reading people's emotion too and how to express our emotion appropriately in response. Contrary to being silent, head hung low, people with high EQ are good with interacting with people in different situations. I believe now there is such thing as SQ (perhaps its social intelligence).

People with high EQ take action despite their emotional state. An example would be feeling afraid in times of great fear, but still having the presence of mind to do what is necessary.

It is only the lack of taking action that is a certainity to failure. As long as you take action you give yourself a chance to overcome.

Default The advantages of EQ

When you have mastery over your emotions you operate with less fear. When you live without fears (or less fears) you become more efficient, take risks, see opportunities, more optimistic, and opportunitistic.

When you have low EQ (high fear) you spend much of your energy in anxiety, anger, jealousy, envy, and even depression. Your relationships suffer. You are unlikley to build strong channels of communication and trust. These are necessary both for happiness in personal relationships and business success.

So much of success comes down to mastery over fears. This equates to mastery over the thoughts, and more importantly the beliefs in the mind.

The key to do this is not IQ. An person with a Phd can have fears, anxiety, and be depressed. IQ doesn't give you immunity from fear.

So does high EQ have mastery over high IQ?

I've read some reports of those having high IQ not able to cope well in life or became mentally unsound in their later lifes.

with "empathy" you are able to aproach a situation with a deeper understanding , "Internal" without even knowing what the particular crisis is, or what the conflict is.. it is like the "internal" connectedness of the emotions already gave you a heads up , so you are "free'ed" up to handle the conflict, the situation is "edited" right from the beginning, therefore making the solution easier to arrive at, We* (high EI) do not have to take anything in, (internalise) we don't use our heads to get a "feel" for a particular situation before we process the solution,9logic in mind) unlike someone with a low EI... I think it is the "empathy" which acts like the cataylist to EI,

where as someone who has not mastered his or her emotions, has to sort through his or her own "external" feelings before he or she can resolve a conflict, and not having the ability to empathise , makes this a bit of a gamble for him or her this is frustrating to me....... because it is like I am always saying "Get to the point"... "ok edit edit edit" ..... I also believe that people who do not have high EI, make more errors in judgment... simply because the emotions cloud the thought process...... and for some people it takes a great deal of time to work through their own emotions to get a clear picture

So a person with a high IQ and a high EQ should be unstoppable?

That's great news!

I have both a high IQ and a high EQ, like my IQ was 122 when I was 10 so it must be around 130 now. I've been working on my EQ for months and i've just tested myself and I got 131.I'm only fifteen so I still have a few years of intellectual growth.

I would say that both IQ and EQ are VERY VERY useful in their own ways.
EQ is really really useful when your interacting in social situations, and perceiving other people's emotions. So your social life becomes fun. You feel like you have complete control over yourself(if you want to) over your feelings your thoughts... etc. For finishing projects it's really useful too. I have a really low rate of procrastination.

Having a high IQ is really useful too, especially at school... Homework becomes less time consuming because memorizing and problem-solving becomes quite an easy automatic process... and you have more time to work on other projects.

I think that more your EQ is high, more your IQ will be useful.

PS: sorry for answering to an old topic but this one really interested me

I know I have high emotional intellignce, not sure where my IQ stands. I've done those online IQ tests in the past and I generally score well but I don't consider that a real test.
I think EQ really comes down to how well you deal with people. I've always had a knack for diffusing situations, getting my point across (in person anyway, lol) and I've always been very sensitive to another persons feelings. I don't anger easily and bounce back quickly.
EQ is a very useful thing to develop. It's been said that the most flexible person is often times the person in charge.

I'll add.

I think Old Soul said it really well.

EQ is all about knowing your own emotions and the ones of others. This allows you to command social situations.

I've been in social situations where people had no idea that they were being needy and crying for attention. It becomes so obvious to the group that this person has some issues. EQ is about spotting people like that, and how to deal with them.

In a group, one totally loses their sense of self. they have no needs, no negative emotions, and the emotions they do portray is that of caring for the group as a whole, and keeping it positive upbeat and progressive.

EQ allows you the power to manipulate people. I don't want to talk about "me" but I do know others who have high EQ. When you see a high EQ person in action, you can tell that's the kind of person who gets everything they want.

High EQ people know that people are still animals, and if you can make them feel the emotion YOU want them to feel, you can make them do anything. They can go into a restaurant, give a smile, make someone feel safe, and get a few extra nachos or a free refill.
