July CGW: Thursday Workshop Meetup

Hi everybody,

Since it has not been mentioned yet, I will start a post about a meetup the night before the CGW. I think that this is a good practice to meet fellow attendees before the workshop, so I want to continue the tradition.

Like before, this would be an informal event.

In the past, this has been held at the Caesar's Palace Casino food court, starting at around 6:30 PM. For the details, I am going off of a previous post made by Alex Wu for the May workshop.

Since this is my first workshop, I am unfamiliar with the area. I am hoping that some CGW alumni living in the area will be present at the meetup, so those of you who have done this in the past, please give us newbies some advice below.

The pre-meeting is a great way to start CGW. I found myself connecting with people at the meet within minutes of meeting the others.

I'm not attending the workshop this time, but I'll be in town and might make an appearance at the meetup.

My flight gets in at 9pm and I'm staying at the Circus Circus hotel. I'd still like to meet up with everyone if you'll be hanging out late. How long do these get-togethers usually run for?

(Also, while I'm here, does anyone know how I can get my profile picture showing as my avatar? Cheers!)

@Burris - kudos to you for putting this together!

I recommend either making a small "CGW Workshop meetup" sign or bring Steve's book/cover to display on a table so others can find you.

Caesers Palace food court is a great place overall to do the meetup, because there's food available and plenty of seating.

@Niall - the meetups really vary in length. At CGW1 some of us stayed till past midnight. Circus Circus is a bit of a hike from Caesars Palace, so if you're getting into Vegas late on Thursday night, you might have to hustle to catch the meetup.

Hey Niall! If people are going to be staying until late, I'll definitely be there too, I'm usually up later anyway.

Alex, I'm having the same trouble figuring how to set my Avatar pic (I was hoping to get it on here so those meeting could recognize each other) but I don't see the "Edit Avatar" option you were talking about. Is this not available to "Junior Members"?

Good idea, though. I'll make sure to have my copy of Steve's book on me.

Also, I get into Vegas around 2... If I don't hear any better ideas I'll spend the intervening time giving myself a walking tour of the strip, but I'm open to suggestions...

For CGW1, I arrived on Wed night and used that evening and the following morning to get used to the Strip before meeting with anyone. It was a wonderful experience for me since I had never been to Vegas before. I actually met with two other people--a mini meetup for lunch at Caesars food court the day of the big meet up. Then I went exploring the strip with one of them--we had a blast!

There are no lack of wonderful displays to look at and activities to participate in. I did something new each CGW I attended. Last time was the first time I experienced an oxygen bar for example! On foot you can cover a lot of ground but the bus is also available to you. Have you befriended any CGWers on facebook? You can get a good idea of the sites along the strip by taking a look at our pictures. There is a CGW group on FB and if you search me "Sonya Sidky" I am the one and only on there Read the guide (one of your three freebies) for more info on what to do in Vegas. Also a helpful more workshop related activity would be to listen to Steve's 88 minute podcast intro (another of the freebies) as it is very helpful to do so close to the time of the workshop--even if you previously listened to it.

I will arrive at 4 PM on Thursday, and I will be staying at Bill's. I wonder if 2 hours is enough time to do anything significant. I wanted to squeeze in some indoor skydiving on Thursday, but that is probably pushing it, so I will do it later. Anyone here staying at Bill's? Maybe we can meet up ahead of time and find our way around Caesar's Palace together.

This is the plan for now. However, some emergencies came up the past few days, so I won't know for certain whether I will be able to attend the workshop until the last minute. Hopefully, I can attend or I will forfeit my registration fee and first night hotel fee.
