Default Challenge from the workshop

Hi All!

As some of you know, the workshop was the begining of a longer trip for me. Going through DC, NYC and london before I reach home. Also, for some reason, a few of the fellow attendees decided to challenge me (thanks alot...) to meet 5 new people a day(on avarage) in (on avarage) 5 different occasions at least, for the rest of my trip. To my folly, I actually accepted the challange and decided to write about it here, so as to both have accountability, and hopefully help someone with similar difficulties as I have grow themselves. So Here goes.

I decided not to include monday in the challenge, since I hadn't slept since sunday morning, and would be a practical zombie. As suchm I only did a warm up excercise with the following:
1) in the airport in vegas I talked asked a random person when the flight to vegas was leaving. Funnily enough, she actually answerd "I have no idea, I just arrived" looking hysterical and upset, and then asked for a lighter, looking even more hysterical. I think she was serious though, and not going with the flow, by the look I saw on her face when we passed her later on.
2) Same airport, by the gate, I talked with the land crew while we were waiting. One more thing - I just mentioned the same day to merri that I hope to get an upgrade to buisness class on my way from NYC to London, and when I boarded the flight to chicago(connection to DC), I noticed I had a first class seat, instead of the seat I ordered, which was a normal one
3) On the flight from Chicago to DC, I talked with the guy sitting next to me. I had an interesting conversation with him, and we talked till my grandparents picked me up at the airport in DC.
After that I went to sleep, and stayed home most of the day

On tuesday, I didn't do anything much till 12 PM. Then I joined my uncle on the way to a hardware store. He later dropped me off at a local mall. During this time, I talked to the following:
1) The Cashier at the hardware store, the conversation went to the avarage hight in my family, and in her family
2) The waiter(?) at einstine bagles. The conversation was about different foods, starting with the source of cabbage salad(I forgot how its actually called) being poland.
3) The piano technician at "The Piano Store", a store at the local mall. I asked him how long he worked in the field, how tuning pianos woked, etc. Very interesting.
4) A owner of a booth selling hand lotion and cosmetics at the same mall. I heard him humming, and asked him what it was. Turnes out he was making it up - I suggested he try recording it, and possibly also learning music theory to be able to write it down, since it sounded good.
5) A group of two local teens, whom I asked about the local live music scene. They recommended some 7 venues I might check out.
6) The owners of a greek restaurant where my uncle and I bought dinner.

Today, I had a very interesting day. It was my first time in DC itself alone. I went to the national mall, and decided on the Natural History museum as my first stop. There, I started (successful) conversations with the following:
1) Three girls in the mammal section. It started with talking about squirrals hibernating, then about other animals we passed until we parted directions.
2) A mother and daughter (the daughter was slightly older than me) from montreal. I started the conversation with them in the dinosaur section, and I really enjoyed it. We kept till they had to leave, and we decided to meet again.
3) A couple who entered when I left the museum for the first time(before going back in looking for food). The bursted laughing just when I exited, and I asked what they were laughing about. It di leave me laughing...
4) A group of students who were playing cards in the cafe in the museum, I enjoyed the conversation. Plus - I encountered an my very first "do people ride camels in israel"?
5) A buddhist nun in the smithsonian castle.
plus the following bonus tries:
6) A girl who asked me to take her picture
7) two different security guards
8) A few random people outside on the national malls park

Thats that, looks like alot now....

Grow and Enjoy!

Dude! You're totally outdoing the challenge!

However, I have another thought for you.

You are not actually building your power this way, because from what I saw in Vegas and what you're reporting here, approaching people to chat doesn't appear to be near the edge of your comfort zone anymore; it's too easy for you.

How about if you update the challenge so that you talk to people to accomplish a certain goal; perhaps a date later, or a friendly dinner, or get some local to be your tour guide somewhere, or anything you would actually like to accomplish...with a goal you could start using the feedback you're getting to feed your truth and authority about accomplishing something- you already have the power!

Hi, Lee-Orr;

Sounds like you had a great time - I'm so glad to hear it! I trust your subsequent journey is going well, and look forward to hearing all about everything as soon as is practical.

I agree with Kevin...time to increase the weights. Your list of accomplishments are inspiring me...almost enough to leave my boat and go to talk to people.

I also agree with Kevin, keep learning new stuff and keep pushing the edge of your comfort zone. I do this and it seems to be working for me.

well - here's what i did the last two days:
for thursday, i decided to set a meeting with the two i met in the dinosaur section. we met at the museum and spent the whole day together. As a result of that, i gave myself an excuse to fail for the day
for friday, i talked to a couple of people, but i didn't have any purpose really, so it didn't get me too excited or anything....
Maybe I'll try finding someone Id like to meet again, and actually do it. That would be harder.

To tag along with what other people are saying, great job. I'd noticed from your updates at the workshop that the approaching thing, which had been challenging before per your comments, no longer challenged you. Letting yourself be open to opportunities that you'd like to pursue further contact, then acting upon them is a great way to go.

Your sharing at the workshop and continuing your progress and reporting here are very inspiring. Keep on doing what you're doing. When I do get out and about, I'm initiating brief conversations more and more and my next step is to extend the conversations then be open to reconnecting.

Default Learning names as an avenue for enriching your life

LeeOrr,

Great job on your 5 people challenge!

One thing I started trying from Dale Carnegie training was learning people's names at restaraunts, grocery stores, bus drivers, etc. that I see periodically throughout my week. At first it was just an exercise for me to practice remembering people's names. But I was surprised how much it made me care more for other people and wakened my intuitive side.

It has literally changed my life! My life feels so much more rich when I great real people with real names. My friends are amazed that I know these people's names and they know me. It's like I am suddenly the life of the party! I get better service and a warm smile whenever I see them. All for the 30 seconds of learning their name a quick greeting when I see them? What a deal!

Wow..Really Margarita?? ;-(.. I'm thinking you are giving more power to this program that you are terrible with names than empowering your muscle of remembering the names..

Chris, that is so true. I know that I love it when I walk in to stores in my area and they greet me by name. I know some of their names, but I have to admit I don't always follow up by asking those whose names I don't know. Silly social anxiety. It's such a small expense on my part, but a great gift to the people who I could greet with names.

You've inspired me to start learning those names. Thanks.

Lee Orr, just by posting your stories and successes I think you are motivating us (well, at least me). Ever since the conference I've been breaking out of my shell more, and by seeing you succeed it helps keep that post-conference slump from showing up.

These forums and all the wonderful success stories I'm seeing on Facebook are extending those three days of the conference into an endless source of motivation.

Keep posting! I love to read them.

hey again!

sorry for not updating anything the last few days. here is my update:
Monday: i went to a museum(air and space in the national mall), and joined a couple from india who i talked to.Later on i started talking to a tour guide(i didnt take the tour) in the museum of native american heritage(dont remember the official name - also a smithsonian) and his group, who were from wales.
tuesday: i went to see the rest of the native american museum. said "ni hao" to two groups of chinese tourists. i helped someone find her water - she forgot it at the counter of the buffet. i then felt sick and went back to my grandparents place.

on these two days i realised something: people seemed to notice me more, start talking with me more, and go out of their way to help me... nice

wednesday - i stayed home, with a cold... so nothing exciting...
thursday - my last day in dc, i went to the air and space museum at the airport. talked tothe guard, guide(i took the tour), two random people, and one of the volunteers in the museum. this day in the morning i visualised finding money, 100 USD, i got those at breakfast from my grandparents.
friday - arrived at new york. i talked to a few people on the way out of the airport. i met one of the flight attendants, she helped me with the subway, and we talked for a while. later - i arrived at the hotel room, and see - on the floor, two quartes. than i remembered - the day before, i saw myself , picking up money, and getting 100 USD, but never said it would be the same incident. i also found 20 dollers in a drawer....
after that - i went out, talked with a few people, and then came back. i met my uncle, and we went to a south african restoraunt and the musical wicked

yesturday - i talked to five different people during my first hour out; one at the elevator, a couple at the hotels exit, a couple at a traffic light, a person looking at a poster in a store, a group of people looking for sheet music for musicals at the largest sheet music store ive seen.... i then went to a musical instrument store, and played there for a few hours. on the way back, at lunch, i talked with a group of people from australia. than i returned to my room for abit of rest and unfreezing. when i left again, i walked all the way down to madison square garden, and then returned to my room. on the way, i talked to someone waiting for a taxi, havinh thought she didnt notice the lights had changed, and she could cross the street....
then was my first time at a bar, of course no alcohole, but i went for the music, and enjoyed it. i also went on stage to join them when they asked someone to sing a small melody for them... that was scary...but fun

so - today is day 3 of 5 in NYC... ill see how things go...

Props for going up on stage and singing, I remember you saying how scary it would have been! Here's a challenge... make a YouTube channel with tons of videos of you singing!

ok - since you had to mention singing... today i was going to film myself singing "new york state of mind" in central park, but i couldn't get the music to play with the camera running(both are on my phone). so, instread, i found a place overlooking a relatively busy area(for 9am on a sunday, lin the park), and sang two songs loudly from there.
now related to the challange, only one interesting one: a family and a friend of theirs walking down the street. i just started talking to them... and we had a walk through central park together, until they went to look for lunch.

OK - I just finished my trip. I arrived home a two hours ago, after a long day. Here's an overview of the last two days in NYC, and my 2.5 days in London:

31-jan-2010: in the evening, I went to another bar, enjoyed the music, bought a pizza. Then when I was about to pay, I was kicked out for being under 21. No one asked for an ID, and I didn't see a sign... they waited till I paid though... Anyhow, I enjoyed the music, and they kicked me out rather politely, so its OK

1-feb-2010: I decided to take the video challange, and Ill upload the videos tomorrow. I went to a music store, and filmed myself playing the piano. I also went and played some guitars there, and actually found a guitar I really liked. Here I challanged my normal attitude ("I cant afford it"), and decided to see if I could. turned out I had around 1.5K of budget left, the guitar cost 1.2K, so I bought it the next day. That was challanging for me, since I had to leave the "i cant afford it" mindset, and really let myself accept I can be abundant - hope it sticks
I don't remember talking to too many people, frankly. Only a guy from greenpeace and thats about it. I after that, I went to see Madison Square Gardens and the Empire State building, nothing too exciting, and then I went to sleep, since I was leaving the next day, and needed enough energy to go till the flight(an evening flight), without having a hotel to crash in.
2 - feb - 2010: I got up early, figured out how to pay for the guitar(problems with my prepaid creadit card - would take 7 days to move money from my bank account to the card... I had about 7 hours to buy the guitar), and went to buy the guitar. I got a free case, strap and pack of picks, which would cost around 200 USD - I basically got a 2.4 K guitar for 1K
After that I met Kimball again - had a good time
Then I went to the airport, talked to a few people there, one significant thing:
I saw a girl who looked depressed by a table, and (took time to get the courage) eventually went and asked "Are you happy?", she said she is, I don't know if I believe her, but never mind that.
On another note - I decided to do something that really scared me - I played my new guitar in the gate area. And sang along abit. I did it a few times, one of them filmed with my phone. I'll post those tomorrow.
Theres another funny thing Ive got to say: I've been intending to meet actors about my age, from a specific move, during this trip, as an LOA excercise. Now was the first "manifestation" of sorts: at the airport, a person who looks just like one of the main actresses in this movie was waiting for my flight, and was a few rows before me on the plane, I didn't try talking to her, so I don't know if its really her, but it sure seemed like it. She had the same voice, and she was on a school trip of sorts, from the UK. More on this later.
The flight was rather uneventful - as usual(to me) by then, I got empty seats next to me(I've been getting great places, including an upgrade, since my flight to vegas... another intention test ).

3-feb-2010: I arrived in london dead tired though. I helped a lady with a baby in a stroller get up the stairs in the tube, but thats the only interesting thing there. I stayed at my fathers aunt, and I basically stayed home that day - I was too tired to go out. though I did enjoy meeting her daughter(older than me by five years) and her daughters boyfriend. Were all musicians, and I really enjoyed talking with them.

4-feb-2010: I went out to london, mainly to the british museum and then walking to hyde park. I also went to watch a gig in the evening. Nothing memorable in terms of talking to strangers. But on the note of the actors intention: Two people who look alot like actors from said movie, were walking down hyde park just past me, and they looked abit like they were trying to hide their faces... Still didn't talk with them.

5-feb-2010: I went on a bus tour of London, as well as the natural history museum here. Really enjoyed it, but was too tired for a gig, so I returned. Had dinner with my fathers aunt's family, at an Indian restaurant. It was enjoyable. Learned quite alot during the day, but nothing memorable in terms of talking to strangers.
On the actors intention: during the tour, I saw quite a few posters of another main actor in said movie, modelling for a shop. It seems this one doesn't currently live in Britain(I checked wikipedia today), so I guess this is a manifestation too... Strangely enough, I didn't try talking to the posters...

4 - feb - 2010: I was on my way home all day, from 8:30 AM to 9:50 PM. I have no idea how a 4 hour flight turned into 10 hours on the road.... (corrected for time difference of 2 hours). Anyhow - here I did talk to a few people, nothing segnificant. I think 4-5 people total.

Thats it, the challange is over. I actually feel I failed, since I am not yet comfortable approaching people randomly and talking to them, and there were cases during this trip when I didn't try talking to people who seemed interesting out of fear. I do think I streached my comfort zone quite abit, just not enough.
Anyhow - tomorrow I start figuring out my life after the CGW, so I may well post a few other challanges of sorts.

Good Luck to you all!

Good night!

The videos - in case you're interested - are here:
Georgia On My Mind at the Sam Ash Music Store in Manhattan: YouTube - 20100201 003
that was really scary, mainly singing in the store and the recording parts being things I don't tend to do.
Some Random Stuff(including parts of Samba Pa Ti and Bohemian Rhapsody) On Guitar in JFK Airport:
YouTube - 20100202 006
This was scary on the whole.... And I played a few times, in different parts of the airport.... Got easier by the time I boarded the plane

Cheers!
