Default Ideas for Short CGW/TLP Presentations...

Hi everyone,

I've been asked to make a couple of short volunteer presentations and am seeking suggestions on how to best present some of the CGW ideas in a limited period of time. Here's the story...

After returning, I met with a growth-oriented friend to share some of the things I learned at the workshop. Based on our discussion of the TLP principles, she immediately recognized how she had been giving up her power by maintaining a connection that is no longer right for her.

My friend is on the board of a local non-denominational spiritual community that meets weekly. She was so impressed with Steve's TLP framework and our discussion, she has asked me to speak for 20 to 30 minutes at a Sunday morning meeting of 50 to 60 members and to meet with those who are interested for a 1 to 2 hour discussion. I have already agreed to do it, because it's a good opportunity for me to connect with this group and to exercise courage by speaking publicly about my own personal growth.

I have spoken before larger groups many times, so I'm generally not concerned about public speaking. But, this would be my first time to speak on a personal growth topic before a group. The first available time slot is next February, so I have plenty of time to prepare. Also, my wife and I are planning to attend the workshop in January, so I'll have another opportunity to immerse myself completely in application of the principles and develop some examples from my own life.

My main concern is that in 20 to 30 minutes or even in 1 to 2 hours, I can barely scratch the surface of what I learned at the workshop. Given those time limitations, should I just try to touch on each of the concepts? Or, should I try to include a short exercise, so it won't be just an intellectual exercise with little effect on an emotional level?

I'm thinking it might be best to briefly cover the key principles in the 20 to 30 minute overview and try to include an exercise or two in the follow up discussion. Am I on the right track? Any other ideas?

I'm excited about doing this. Others will probably have similar opportunities and I'm hoping Steve and workshop attendees can provide some guidance in this topic.

Thanks for your help,

Steven

PS: It's a non-profit, volunteer presentation, and I won't use any of Steve's copyrighted material without permission.

I would also briefly cover the 7 principles and, by giving personal examples, show how aligning yourself more with these principles has allowed you to achieve growth. That should be interesting enough to hold attention.

But do finish with an exercise so people listening can benefit instantly by applying what you've learned.

For the 1-2 hour session, maybe get someone on stage and help them with a certain area of their life? That one always works

I'm also planning to do a speech based on my experiences for Toastmasters next Tuesday, and that one can only take 7 minutes max! So I'll just talk about growth in general

Good luck, it will be a very interesting day for you. Too bad it's still months away

Thank you Daan!

I like your idea of making sure to include personal examples, even in the brief overview and to include participatory exercises in the longer session.

In the meantime, I'm also going to speak to a small mastermind group I meet with monthly.

Good luck with your Toastmasters speech! Seven minutes probably will pass so quickly when you're speaking.

I echo Daan completely. Sounds like a fun opportunity and you always learn something even better by teaching it.

Is your wife going to be a workshop participant? I'm returning with my husband in Jan and this time he'll be attending. We're reading Steve's book aloud to each other in the evenings. There's a lot of material there and I come up with new pieces on each reading.

I want a mastermind group! I've been looking unsuccessfully here in Sacramento and I might just have to start one myself.
