Default Contributing - forums vs. blogs?

I have a question especially for those who contribute to online forums, as well as write your own blog. Do you ever use your own content from your forum posts as part of your blog or vice versa?

If I have ideas that arise as a result of drafting and submitting posts, should i feel free to build on that idea - even copy verbatim - on my blog? I do believe all postings to an online forum become the copyright of that forum. Does that complicate things if the content overlaps between blog/forums?

For that matter, from your perspective, does this sound like a reasonable thing to be concerned about?

I copy freely between my blog and my forum posts. The main reason I do this is because both of them have vastly different audiences, but sometimes I'll want to repeat what I've said to one group of people to another. So, in terms of sheer contribution, the only problem might come if people who read both get annoyed by the redundancy: hopefully, they won't.

There are other things that might affect your judgement of the matter, though. I'm not an SEO practitioner, so I'm going to point out if you do either for money or for credibility (expert status; relevance), then copying content may be detrimental. Linking would be more effective. But then you should probably post in Business or Technology.

I agree with Michael - linking to content in one medium or the other has many advantages.

If I do share content between the 2, it is usually just a short quote or other excerpt, certainly not the whole blog post or forum post.

A combination of the 2 methods could be effective. For example, "Over at the forum I participated in a conversation where I said 'blah, blah, blah' and if you are interested, here is the link to go check out the full details".

Something along those lines could work on forums or blog posts.

You have the copyright for postings you write in an online forum. The same goes for comments you leave on other peoples blogs.

Thank you to all to your helpful input.

@ Michael Chui and aaronmp2003 - Interesting, I wouldn't have thought of it that way. I'll keep it in mind.

@ Brutha - thanks for clearing that up.

Now all I have to do is hone the ol' writing skills.

Another option is to use forum questions and answers as ideas for blog posts. Sometimes you'll find a number of comments centered around a theme you know something about. If so, you can blog about it.

I use copy from my blog on here but my forum posts tend be edited for two reasons.

Firstly for brevity so that they offer an overview of the subject and secondly so that those that do want to find out more can do so if they wish which obviously has traffic benefits for the blog.

Hmmm, does that make it three reasons?
