Default 30 day trial/fast: No violent music

This was actually inspired by Steve's "Subjective Reality and Nonviolence" post. For the next 30 days, no violence-glorifying rap music for me. Replacing that with Tchaikovsky, Al Green, and others who glorify love instead.

Don't know if this will help put more peace and love in the world or in myself, but it's worth a try to see what happens.

I am going to thank you here for the inspiration. I seem to be skipping over the depressing and violent songs already, but when I finally get to reorganising my music library, I am going to throw these out for good!

Good luck on your fast.

This music thing probably depends on the person. Iff, when you throw the angry music out of the library, can you give it to me, I'm running out of them and listening to the old ones doesn't give the same kick any more.

Not that I'm violent or anything, far from it. But I have found that listening to angry music helps taking my anxiety away. Just yesterday I had to listen two hours of Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park and some other stuff and while it's not all gone(anxiety), it's much less. I have tried listening to merry and happy music, I have loads of it and if I'm a happy bunny then I like it very much.

I can relate to this. I used to use Tupac's "Holler if you hear me" every morning to get pumped to wake up, get out of bed, and go to the gym. Although most pump-up music is angry, you can find non-violent pump-up music (such as Red Hot Chili Peppers.) (Note: RHCP songs are all about sex, but I don't find that offensive like songs about violence.)

I like RHCP too. I have found too that there are some hints to sex in there. Now, after some 6 years I finally understood what that "Californication" has to do with sex. Limp Bizkit sometimes tends to get a little agressive indeed but I found that at least some of the songs don't propagate violence. Linkin Park has come across to me as weltschmertz-y music. Also, I read that they don't use "bad words" because they feel that they can get their point across without using profanities. I kinda like that.
I don't know about rappers though because I generally don't listen to rap music...

Nice idea, it certainly can't hurt.

I just started a 30 day trial where I am not allowing myself to complain about anything, I already had to restart twice. Its a tough one lol.

Thumbs up You Go!

Go Poetrythug! I did this about a year and a half ago and it made a huge difference in how I felt overall. There's a terrific thread over in Emotional Mastery that might give you some more ideas for replacement music.

Oh, and Freelancer, I love your idea too. Definitely a challenge. It might be easier for you if you try and replace complaints rather than simply trying to omit them. For instance, every time you feel like complaining about something, mention some blessing in your life instead. (For instance, you think, "Ugh, it's raining. I detest rain." and you say, "Look how well this umbrella keeps my hair dry.") I don't know why, but I've always found it much easier to replace "bad" habits with new (desirable) ones than to just try and stop them.

I'm rooting for you both!
