Side note, I almost believe that this belongs in the Emotional Mastery forum instead of Character and Contribution. I believe that values are *emotionally-driven* and the benefits of "Living our Values" are reflected emotionally rather than being related to "contributing to the world." Though maybe I'm wrong... For example, a business's values reflects its contribution to its customers. So maybe your values reflect your contribution to the world. Anyway, what do you guys think? Can you help me learn more? Maybe you can point to a favorite book or article that challenged and shaped your values thinking? |

I'd say that my values are heavily shaped and influenced by the Conversations with God books, the Kryon channellings that I've read online, hours and hours of face-to-face channelling sessions with a channeler in my family over the last decade, and most recently by some blog posts by Lauren Gorgo and Steve Pavlina. Was that what you meant? My apologies if I misunderstood what you were aiming for. |

For me I have to connect with my conscience and heart and see what sounds resonant with it. Emotions are all over the place and can lead to really bad directions. The intellect can be effective, but it lacks any soul or compassion. Only the values of the heart are really worth following. |

Values are guides of conduct, they drive us to pursue certain things over others. It is through action that we see our true values come out as opposed to what we think we value. If we say we value health but continually to eat fast food then there is a disconnect with what we actually do. The key is to really try to be aware of what our true values are and ask ourselves why they are like that. There could be a multitude of reasons, from good to bad. Values are ultimately guides of direction, so it is important to actually see what our true one's are and change them to better one's if need me. Alot of what I've studied of values comes from the philosophy of John Dewey. They are an integral part of his moral philosophy. |

I think I got my values primarily from my parents - its kind of all you know as a kid. Then like everyone I re-evaluated and adjusted as I grew, learned, and experienced. At 40 years old I think my values are still being shaped as I move through different phases of life and my priorities change. Most recently I attended a year long leadership intensive where I live, and it REALLY shaped my values about what's needed in this world and what my role is as a human being - or as they would say, "what it means to be alive and human". The program was run by a gentleman named Ken Low, and is based on his 40 years of research. He has pioneered a new field called Human Learning Ecology - it's all about how we learn, and how that translates into wise action and wise leadership, and how mankind can learn from the patterns of the past to stop making the same mistakes over and over again. It's truly remarkable stuff, and really what we need right now. (Sorry, when I started typing I wasn't planning to talk about this - but I guess it shows where my values lie) Anyway, if you're interested you can find Ken Low doing a TED talk on youtube, and I believe he's coming out with a book eventually that I'll be recommending to everyone So back to my values... long story short, I think they just evolve alongside my own evolution |

I would read up on his moral views which can be found at the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Dewey's Moral Philosophy (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) Check section 2.1 for the values. It might be lexicon heavy but I hope it helps. | |

How did you determine your values?... Determination is driven from value of my own experience FOR SURE. I'M GONNA REAP WHAT I SOW in short... What ever you value.... don't do what it takes to get rid of it! |

My values are based on what makes me feel good. Nothing else to it. You can argue with someone over what is right or wrong, but I find this pointless because its all based on that particular persons experience in life. If you feel good doing it, 99% of the time its something good. Do you enjoy killing kittens? I doubt it. But I would wager a bet you feel good helping somebody who is unable to help themselves! Be true to yourself, and you won't need virtues. |

Hi, I consider my values to be the things that automatically drive me to act in a way that adds real meaning to my life; almost like my "internal motivators". And the wonderful thing is that everyone has their own uniquely ordered set of values, which in turn influence our "strengths" and "weaknesses" in life. Because we tend to naturally excel at the things that are aligned with our *highest values*. I know personally, when I live and act according to the values I value most highly (no pun intended!), I feel most like *myself*, glowing, excited, on purpose, and “in the zone”. As such, I methodically set goals around the values that are most important to me - the ones that I am automatically motivated to fulfil, so that each step I take will be rewarding and ultimately so I can enjoy a real sense of personal satisfaction and fulfilment as I work to achieve my goals. I find it hard to go past Dr John Demartini for simple, yet *powerful*, value determination tools - you can check them out at: Determine Your Values What Are Values? There are some great short audios there too. Enjoy and good luck! |
