A couple of days ago I was sitting with friends at a café in the airport arrival zone. We noticed how positively it affected our mood to see lots of people reuniting with her loved ones. Some people looked around with an "I wish somebody would be waiting for me, too" look. So we came up with the idea to go there sometime with Free Hug posters and welcome people. And Daan's legacy inspired me to post this here, to inspire you to think of places other than the classical free hug places to offer hugs to people! |

Not so much hugs but at the Calgary airport in Canada, they have people dressed in western outfits with the cowboy hats and everything at the arrivals area to welcome travelers arriving in Calgary. I think this is a great gesture. I haven't seen this too much anywhere else. |

Well, I also guess it isn't really about ignoring cultural inhibitions just to do a cool new thing, which may not really reach people because it is SO new in some cultures. I have come to appreciate much more small stretches outside comfort zones. Starting to hug more in my personal life, in more situations, and have that go viral... | |

Free Hugs in public places is a great idea. The British government launched a similar initiative not long ago on the London Underground Service, except the purpose was to make you smile and it was really uplifting and set the tone for the rest of the morning. "Yet as of Monday, watch out for Smile for London cheering up January with artistic interventions on those London Underground video screens, injecting a dash of creativity into your dreary commute and hopefully making you smile. Established artists were invited to create 20 second silent films to uplift and inspire commuters." I remember watching an advert or reading something about hiring people to hang around near the trains and look the commuters in the eye and smile at them. Gave the usual grim and windy cold underground a new positive vibe i bet. Last edited by KyaSul; 07-04-2011 at 11:08 PM. |
