Hey, I'm looking to donate some of my used action figures and books to kids this holiday season. By that, I mean I want to get it directly into their hands - I don't want to take it up to Goodwill or anything like that, where they sell the items and then pass the money to their programs or whatever. What are the best charities I can go to in order to accomplish this?

Matt, Good for you! I guess this type of donating means that it probably needs to be something local, so that will probably limit things. Also, charities like Toys for Tots pretty much want new toys. One thing that just popped into my mind is to contact local churches, since many of them have some sort of charity thing going on. Possibly a county or state agency that deal with kids who have been removed from their homes? Maybe if your books are in good condition a local library would like them. Just a few thoughts... |

Hmmm, speaking with local churches isn't something I had considered. I'm sure my aunt and her family would know some good ones I could use. All of my stuff is good condition - a bit...dusty, but they're unmarked and/or all of their parts are intact.

The needy are there all around you. You just have to look. I work with kids across the Las Vegas valley who most often have been dealt a bad hand in life. To top that off, there are over 50,000 homeless here living in caves, drain tunnels etc. Straying away from the traditional charities might seem out of place but believe me you can find the needy if you look. As others have mentioned, try craigslist but beware of scams.
