I thought this was very touching: Couple gives away $11.2m in lottery winnings - thestar.com An elderly couple won millions of dollars, but didn't even want the money. Quote:
They are truly an example of people who have found happiness and joy from things other than material possessions. Not only that... But when they gave away the money... They actually enjoyed doing it to help others. I suspect their lives will be even more filled with joy by seeing and hearing from all of the people they have helped with their money. This is truly a commendable couple! Last edited by Curtis2011; 11-04-2010 at 05:40 AM.

Thanks for posting that as I hadn't heard about it. That's wonderful that they're able to help so many others with their winnings. They did say they kept a small percentage for a rainy day fund, which is a smart thing to do.

That is such an uplifting story! Thank you so much, Curtis2011, for posting the story. John (my wonderful husband) and I have a plan to start a charitable foundation once our own ship sails into port. Really, when we think about it: how much can 2 people truly need for themselves? Even if I ate at my favorite restaurants and cooked only the best organic foods all the time, I still could only spend "just so much," so why not help others while we're at it? Heaven only knows how many people have helped me in so many ways in my own life. We give what we can now - but honestly, we can't wait to give even more! Congratulations to this wonderful couple for their beauty of character and soul. |

Wow, such an admirable couple! I wish more people are like them. LOL. What touched me the most is that they're "just happy to have each other." Whew stories like these are a great way to inspire people. Their generosity will come back to them a hundredfold! |

This couple was on the news last night. This couple truly know what matters in life. Her husband Allen said 'you can't buy happiness and you can't buy health, which is something my wife...' at which point he gets choked up and can't continue. (I get choked up at that part too!) Violet just finished her last chemotherapy session. She thinks giving away the money has improved her health. They don't need a new a new car as the one they have still works fine. They even have one of those old rotary phones that's affixed to the wall. (So cute!) N.S. couple gives away $11M in lottery winnings - CTV News They wanted to help the hospitals, WarAmps, SPCA, churches, fire depts, family and friends etc. as the community had been good to them. They didn't do it to get recognition and her husband said all the attention is too much BS. (lol) Canada AM - Canada's Most Watched National Morning News Program (Under Canada AM & Jeff's Videos - cursor down to: Allen and Violet Large, lottery winners) |

Nice! Yet, I don't understand why they played lotto in the first place, if they do not give a hang about the money. It is not as if the odds are in your favour. So, you could equally donate the money you spend on lottery tickets to charity. Still, commendable attitude! |

I read this on HuffPost. At their age, they won't have enough time to spend all the money. I have this feeling that the couple have lived their life to the fullest to see past the benefit of having so much money.

Not related to your post but - this couple could easily have a good ten or fifteen years left, it can't be too nice for them to hear people say "ah, no big deal, they'll just croak soon anyways." I, for one, would have no problem spending this much money in a year or two if I really could.
