Default Leaving

I'm a high school student in the U.S. and have recently stopped being a christian and switched to the philosophy of Buddhism. My family expects me to become some brilliant engineer, which I wanted to be.. now I want to leave and pursue my own spiritual path, I want to travel the world and experience it, not stick around to be something I'm not. I don't know how to tell my family because I know they will all be disappointed in me. Any advice?

Does your family have a strong nature / nurture tendency towards achievement in science / engineering ? If YOU really love science, don't throw it ALL away, at least not for ever. We need consciousness engineers too. New advances in brain science / theories seem to be compatible with Buddhist theory. Engineer, within any field, a planet that reduces suffering.

While it's OK to doubt our career choice, I think you can follow the path of Buddhism without having to leave everything behind. You don't have to be an engineer if you don't want to, but you can surely practice Buddhism in Texas.
