Default Favorite Philosophical Songs

For me, certain songs have an incredible ability to challenge my thoughts and expand my perception. My four favorite philosophical songs at the moment are:
  • Into the Dark by Ben Lee
  • On the Radio by Regina Spektor
  • Goodbye Alice in Wonderland by Jewel
  • Cash Money by The Beautiful Girls

If you're interested you can hear these songs and read my favorite lines from them at my full post here.

What are your favorite philosophical songs?

I love Regina Spektor. Cool to meet a fellow fan
Along those lines Blues Lips, Man of a Thousand Faces, and The Genius Next Door are all excellent philosophical songs by her. On the Radio's definitely up there too--most of her songs are philosophical

And there's Death of Mother Nature Suite, Apercu, Closet Chronicles, and many more by Kansas.

Soul Meets Body, Bixby Canyon Bridge and Grapevine Fires by Death Cab for Cutie are great.

Hmm..I know there are other good ones...will have to think on that.

Xavier Rudd is one of my favourite singer. He lived with the Aborigines for several years, is vegetarian, never wear shoes, and plays guitar, drums and didge all by himself (very impressive). Most of his songs are great.

There is an other band with meaningful songs, Tryo, though it's in French.

" Chocolate Jesus" from Tom Waits...no wait, it's funny more than philosophical...or is it?

Don't go to church on Sunday
Don't get on my knees to pray
Don't memorize the books of the Bible
I got my own special way
I know Jesus loves me
Maybe just a little bit more
I fall down on my knees every Sunday
At Zerelda Lee's candy store
Well it's got to be a chocolate Jesus
Make me feel good inside
Got to be a chocolate Jesus
Keep me satisfied

More lyrics: Tom Waits Lyrics

Hey Weena, great choice with Xavier Rudd! 'Let Me Be' and 'Solace' are two of his songs that I really like and if you like Xavier Rudd's music then chances are you will like The Beautiful Girls who I have listed above - they are a similar style. I have one of their video clips embedded into my post if you're interested (follow the link in my first post).

Mine's gotta be Reborn by LORD:

The story over
The final chapter
Laid to rest
And said our last goodbyes

They say we come from nothing
And return to nothing
Dust to dust
That fairy tale is nothing but a lie

We all search for meaning
In an age of reason
Before our eyes the prize
That very few can see

To live for now and ever
Past ties are ripped and severed
Break the chains and claim
Our immortality

Thrown from the precipice
Cast to damnation
For new life: a sacrifice
Old life must die
Oh, yet the spirit still remains...

Challenge obsolete ideals
Deconstruct reality
Recreate the world around me
I will be reborn
Leave forgotten sins behind
Resurrect my will to be
I arise for my ascendence
I will be reborn

Look past naive delusions
To see a new day
Oh, a place with no confusion
So take me away...

[Solos: LT]

Torn from the chrysalis
Raging with hunger
Emerge from the funeral pyre
The Phoenix arise

Thrown from the precipice
Cast to damnation
For new life: a sacrifice
Old life must die
Oh, yet the spirit still remains...

Challenge obsolete ideals
Deconstruct reality
Recreate the world around me
I will be reborn
Leave forgotten sins behind
Resurrect my will to be
Beyond the sacrifice

Arise... I will be reborn

YouTube - 3Doors Down It´s the only one you´ve got ACOUSTIC

How do you know where you're going
When you don't know where you've been
You hide the shame that you're not showing
And you won't let anyone in
A crowded street can be a quiet place
When you're walking alone
And now you think that you're the only
One who doesn't

[Chorus:]
Have to try
And you won't have to fail
If you're afraid to fly
Then i guess you never will
You hide behind your walls
Of maybe nevers
Forgetting that there's something more
Than just knowing better
Your mistakes do not define you now
They tell you who you're not
You've got to live this life you're given
Like it's the only one you've got

Memories have left you broken
And the scars have never healed
The emptiness in you is growing
But so little left to fill
You're scared to look back on the days before
You're too tired to move on
And now you think that you're the only one who doesn't

[Chorus]

What would it take
To get you to say that I'll try
And what would you say if
This was the last day of your life

You hide behind your walls
Of maybe nevers
Forgetting that there's something more
Than just knowing better
Your mistakes do not define you now
They tell you who you're not
You've got to live this life you're given
Like it's the only one you've got

You hide behind your walls
Of maybe nevers
Forgetting that there's something more
Than just knowing better
Your mistakes do not define you now
They tell you who you're not
You've got to live this life you're given
Like it's the only one you've got

Well I already mentioned the band tool in a post today but Right in two by tool.

Angels on the sideline,
Puzzled and amused.
Why did Father give these humans free will?
Now they're all confused.

Don't these talking monkeys know that
Eden has enough to go around?
Plenty in this holy garden, silly monkeys,
Where there's one you're bound to divide it.
Right in two.

Angels on the sideline,
Baffled and confused.
Father blessed them all with reason.
And this is what they choose.
And this is what they choose...

Monkey killing monkey killing monkey
Over pieces of the ground.
Silly monkeys give them thumbs,
They forge a blade,
And where there's one
they're bound to divide it,
Right in two.
Right in two.

Monkey killing monkey killing monkey.
Over pieces of the ground.
Silly monkeys give them thumbs.
They make a club.
And beat their brother, down.
How they survive so misguided is a mystery.

Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to live to light a heaven conscious of his fleeting time here.

Cut it all right in two
Fight over the clouds, over wind, over sky
Fight over life, over blood, over prayer,
overhead and light
Fight over love, over sun,
over another, Fight...

Angels on the sideline again.
Been soon long with patience and reason.
Angels on the sideline again
Wondering when this tug of war will end.

I think the following song... Aerials by System of a Down is so powerful it actually defines my theory of all existence in metaphorical ways.
Even the first 3 lines... to be describe the oneness of all spirits in existence living as one in the eternal river... how we separate for a brief moment during life (the fall) and then return to one after the fall. Sooo amazing.

Life is a waterfall,
we're one in the river,
and one again after the fall.

Swimming through the void
we hear the word,
we lose ourselves,
but we find it all...

Cause we are the ones that want to play,
always want to go,
but you never want to stay.

And we are the ones that want to choose,
always want to play,
but you never want to lose.

Aerials, in the sky,
when you lose small mind,
you free your life.

Life is a waterfall,
we drink from the river,
then we turn around and put up our walls.

Swimming through the void,
we hear the word,
we lose ourselves,
but we find it all...

Cause we are the ones that want to play,
always want to go,
but you never want to stay.

And we are the ones that want to choose,
always want to play,
but you never want to lose, ooooo.

Aerials, in the sky,
when you lose small mind,
you free your life.

Aerials, so up high,
when you free your eyes,
eternal prize.

Aerials, in the sky,
when you lose small mind,
you free your life.

Aerials,so up high,
when you free your eyes,
eternal prize

"Paint it Black"

Reminds me of who I was after the war and who I am now.
