I would have to say "Gladiator" for a slew of reasons. On the surface it is a gritty gory movie but dig deeper and it is one of the most powerful movies I have ever watched to this day.

How so? Gladiator was my favorite movie in high school, but back then I was an uninspired person who liked things for reasons I wouldn't today, or reasons I wouldn't have known how to explain. I don't think the movie inspired me... I just thought it was good and don't really know why.

Under the Tuscan Sun, because the resolution has nothing to do with glomming on to another person in order to feel whole. In fact, it's about feeling wholly yourself through exploring yourself.

It's really all a matter of perspective. For me, it is a very emotionally powerful movie. It was a great story of perseverance and determination even if the main character ended up acting out of vengeance in the end. I'm just generally very interested in human behavior and the movie really showcases a full range of what we are capable as humans.

Wow! I am definitely going to come back to this thread for some amazing ideas for movies! I've never been that much of a movie watcher, but found myself saying, "Oh yeah! I forgot about that one!"

I loved the Pursuit of Happyness, which I just saw a couple of weeks ago.

Also, now that it's nearing the holidays, I'll be watching my annual viewing of "It's a Wonderful Life" which always inspires me.

Thanks for some great ideas folks!

Oh, i feel i could make the list go on forever, so i better quite now.
I know this was a while ago, and I think the point about different kinds of inspiration is a good one, but I find it hilarious that Eurotrip and A River Runs Through It are on the same list of inspirational movies.

A River Runs Through It is one of my favorites, so I'm glad it made it on your list.

Gene, it's been a while...almost a year now since CGW, but reading this made my day. I try to tell people about Secondhand Lions all the time and it seems that not too many people have heard of it!

I hope everything is fantastic with you.

My list of inspirational films is very long but the all time winner that beats all the rest no matter how the list increases is Ben-Hur (1959)

I forgot to mention ''Hachi: A Dog's Tale'' - I'm a sucker for 'based on the true story' movies.
I just love this story of a loyal dog )

'Pay it Forward' was a good movie. It's about this grade school class and the teacher gives them all the assignment to invent something that would change the world. So this one kid (Hale Joe Osmond-or whatever his name is) he invents this idea called "pay it forward" it's where whenever someone does something nice for someone, they simply tell the person to just 'pay it forward' and do three nice things for someone else.

I'm into non Hollywood movies lately and I fount that some countries like India, South-Korea, China and Japan make movies that are somethimes better then what is made in Hollywood nowadays.

Some non hollywood recommendations

1. Iqbal (about an indian cricket player) imdb rating 8.2

2. The Children of Heaven (story about 2 poor kids in Iran and a pair of shoes) imdb rating 8.1

3. Taegukgi hwinalrimyeo (2 brothers in the Korean war) imdb rating 8.2

4. Yip Man (semi biography about the inventor of wing chung and also teacher of bruce lee) imdb rating 8.2

5. The good, the bad and the weird (not really inspirational but fun korean movie) imdb rating 7.4

6. Diarios de motocicleta or The Motorcycle Diaries (A roadtrip movie about Che Guevara in his youth) imdb rating 7.9

7. Kundun (story about the 14th dalai lama and the problems with the Chineese) Come to think of it this might be a hollywood movie but not sure. imdb rating 7.1

There are plenty of others, but I can't think of more atm. Don't watch the dubbed versions but watch movies in their original language with subtitles. Watching dubbed movies is so nasty. LEAVE HOLLYWOOD CHECK OUT THE WORLD CINEMA!

Surprised by this selection! I'm Indian by birth and Iqbal is a great movie indeed.

Other than that, Pursuit Of Happyness is one of the most inspiring movies. Many scenes in that movie left me with a lump in the throat.

I agree, there are some real gems. Some asian movies however have a great story, but simply awful acting or pace.

Here are some of mine (not really inspirational, but good international cinema):

El secreto de sus ojos
Oldboy
Ong Bak
Taxi
Pretty much every movie by Pedro Almodóvar
Das Boot
The lives of others
Run, Lola, Run.
