Default Persuasion Techniques - Ethical?

The most persuasive techniques have their roots in NLP (neuro-linguistic programming). These persuasion techniques are based on empathy – in order to persuade someone – you must understand them.

The purpose of connecting with someone emotionally is to learn what they want. When you know this, you are only persuading them to do something that they will want to do anyway. So, by its definition, persuasion is not manipulation – it is just bringing your point across. Or is it?

What are your thoughts?

NLP is not in and of itself "ethical" -- it's just a set of tools that can be used in accordance with one's ethics, or not.

The originators of NLP, and most (non-PUA) trainers I've come across, emphasize operating with integrity: a win/win intention.

I think this is pretty much true of just about any technique someone might use to persuade another -- the tool itself doesn't determine the ethics of using it -- that's up to the user of the tool. It just works better, in my view, to operate with a win-win intention.

If it's possible, it's ethical.

It's unethical to do what you don't want to.
