This is a two part... thing.. that i have for everyone. My main question is as follows. I want to spend at least the next decade helping people abroad. Disaster relief, impoverished countries etc. What college degree would best equip me to do so, or what college degree would people best equipped to help me do so take seriously? Please keep reading though, if you have the time or patience After a period of about sixth months of a catastrophic depression (it was, i dont exaggerate this point. My entire life stopped and i spent a year of my life on a computer game) i recovered about four months ago, and have sinced moved back to living with my parents. My dad is paying for me to go back to school, and i'm doing my best to prevent myself from ever entering a state similar to what i know now to be hell on earth, albeit one i created. From this site, i received a lot of advice that was basically "stay active." So i have been, joined back in with my old martial arts style (shotokahn) and have been attending a writers workshop, not to mention helping my parents around the house and building my relationship back up with them and my brothers. One step at a time right? So now what? I've been putting thought into Volunteer work, and am amazed at how HARD it is to find information about this online. For those of you who do volunteer, where do you do it and for how many hours a week. Unfortunately i am limited by a lack of driving license and currently no job, though i am "actively" (but not as much as i should) searching for one of those too. (The thing is i refuse to work for a company that manipulates, capitalizes on poverty, or capitalizes on my "allotted time" and merely pays me minimum wage. Might sound haughty, but **** anyone who doesn't want to take me seriously.) For those of you who have dedicated yourselves to helping others.. Where have you been, what have you done. Do you think it was a positive choice for your life? How have you managed it. What tools do i need to develop? Right now my ideal life would consist of: Traveling abroad. Helping nations the US has taken advantage of (not to mention the rest of the western world) Having a marginal income from this practice. Eg. enough to buy beers on the weekends (maybe) or at the very least lodging and food plus travel fair. It might not seem like it on this post but i am a Fair writer, So i've also considered journalism as a major, though i know the "send people to report on things" industry is dead in the water right now. As always. Any advice, recommendations or positive thoughts are welcome and appreciated. |
