I think if you look at the world, it's pretty clear that it is being run by evil people. So what the world really needs is for these people to be overthrown and for a genuine democracy to be installed.

Unfortunately this is going to be extremely difficult, because they own the media, the education system and nearly all the political parties Still, we can but hope.

Well, my answers would still be the same, a "will to live" and a "will to change" because if we want to grow, then we'll need both of these. Although, I should also probably add to this what others have said as well: love, because love is what will guide the way to what is generally considered positive growth according to our standards.

i realize you may already know this very well, but self-actualization is not simply another term for being happy. it is far more than that. in short, self-actualization is doing what you were born to do and deriving a deep satisfaction from realizing one's full potential. happiness is fleeting, the positive feelings from self-actualization are longer lasting. as i said, you may know that, but i think it's an important distinction.

but i do agree, people can still reach for a higher state. that's harder to do when you're hungry, but it can be a source of motivation. then again, so can a state of self-actualization. (i just had a moment of insight about my own life, which i won't share here so i don't derail the thread. but i do want to say thanks to karen and to Alexi for setting the stage for this moment of insight.)

i read the previous posts, but i didn't read them closely. so if i'm parroting ideas already shared, my apologies and it's not intentional.

the outer world is a reflection of the inner world. so i think doing our work, healing our pain, lifting ourselves up to higher and higher emotional/vibrational states - this affects our reality. if 51% of the world's population did this, the world would shift at the speed of a thought - and most of us wouldn't even realize things had changed. hundredth monkey effect. so healing ourselves, giving ourselves more and more unconditional love, this affects the world as well.

showing authentic unconditional love toward others would help the world too, but i think this becomes more natural when there is greater self-love.

What about that theory on fasting?

nice!

i'd say that comes from an intention to go without food for the purpose of reaching higher vibrational states (or at least, as far as i know that's the oldest and most common purpose of fasting). to me, if you are hungry, but that isn't from your own intention, that physical hunger can interfere.

of course, i subscribe to the view that intention is just about everything.

I mentioned putting love/talent aside to make it easier to think about an answer. If you look at the world from afar, and remove each individual's purpose (to include love and talent), what is the ONE thing that would very simply benefit the human race. "Love" IS probably the ultimate answer, but I'm trying to figure out how to apply that into a pratical career.

Say someone has boundless talent and love, what is the best way for this person to contribute? (note: I'm not trying to imply I fit this description at all but it may help to think about the question)

i think perhaps in terms of a career, becoming certified to help others through coaching or counseling might be a very good way to contribute. i don't feel qualified to say what is the best way, and i'll add that i'm in school for counseling, so i may be biased.

one could decide to work for a group like Heifer International to assist families that don't always have enough to eat.

Any given human being's first duty is to understand. Once they understand, then they cause change. In causing change, a human being achieves competence and fulfills his capacity. As that capacity is tapped, they must teach, to start others on the same path.

So what does the world need? Teachers.

They can be traditional teachers, as you'd find in schools. They can be counselors or coaches, as rei points out. They can be mentors in businesses. They can be guides, builders, gurus, thought leaders, statesmen, videographers, whatever.

You want to contribute? Learn. Act. Then teach.

I think the answer to the question will vary widely as each individual trudges his road to happy destiny and his bliss. There is not one answer but rather a broad cluster of answers for individuals and for groups.

I couldn't help thinking this depends on what part of the world you want to contribute to. ie, the human beings, the animals, the plants, or the atmosphere of the second moon of Jupiter?

Now, personally, I'd go with the third moon. But hey, to each their own.

I don't have a big philosophical answer for that, but I can say that I've noticed that people respond very well when I tell them about veganism (I mean, there is a relatively high proportion of people who get value out of what I have to say). So when the time is right, I intend to supercharge my recipe blog into a full-blown conscious eating site with lots of resources on veganism. I really think the world is calling people to this service.

Anyone else want to have a go?
