Personal development seems easy compared to social development. It can be hard to comprehend the mechanisms that lead to the injustices we see everyday, although there is no doubt money is behind most of it. Comprehending the situation is pointless though and the question really is, What should we do about it? My question is targeted to those who have a cause. It could be anything, ranging from environmental to giving services to the helpless. I've recently taken interest in a cause. But I'm unsure about how to carry it out. So I was wondering if some of you could share your experiences. What steps did you or are you taking to help your cause?

Personally, I think it goes hand in hand regardless of what societal issues are most important for you. In my case, I'm a big dog lover (cats too, but I'm more of a "dog person"). There's plenty of "micro" opportunities for helping abused and neglected dogs such as volunteering with rescue groups or even adopting a pet of your own. On a "macro" level the best way to make a difference is to have influence and resources. This allows you to leverage your financial/professional success for the greater good. In my case, I contribute money to groups that rescue and find homes for abused and neglected dogs. I use my fairly significant professional reputation to network and provide exposure on behalf of charities. I'll expand on this thought later--basically, there's no reason at all why your own good and the greater good of society can't work hand in hand.

I'm a big believer in your highest good being society's highest good as well. The fastest way to help the world is to put yourself beyond help first: physically, emotionally, financially, spiritually. Once you're out of the game, it's much easier to help other people "win" |
