Default My Purpose from a dream: Make Memories Not Excuses

I think I have found my purpose. I had a dream and it really spoke to me.

In the dream I was looking back at the memories as if I was a black man. The memory started out when he was in his late 30’s early forties. The era looked to be around the 1950’s or 60’s, long before black’s were allowed to have any real rights. He had salt and pepper hair. He was working in a factory when his supervisors decided to try to move this crane like arm that had been cordoned off. He tried to warn them and when they wouldn’t listen, he stepped out of the building. They moved the crane and of course it fell and destroyed part of the factory. Everyone was evacuated out into the cold. There is a scene then with a little girl that had lost her gloves and was looking cold. He gives her his worn out gloves and she thanks him for it. Later on he finds out it was one of the owner’s daughters. They were touched and somehow he gets a break and becomes a supervisor. The next memory I have is him going to school, becoming a lawyer then a Supreme Court judge each time he has a huge grin on his face like it is the best thing in the world. At the end of the dream his is 92, still with that big smile on his face. A reported asks what has made him so successful after starting out so late in life. He replies “Make Memories Not Excuses” and for some reason it resonated with me. I felt like I had lived his life and completely understood how the phrase really summed up how he lived his life after that one day and how fulfilling his life became after that. Lot’s of energy and home.

I have never had a dream that affected my quite like that. I have been reading self help materials for at least 20 years, but never really acting on them. I have been lurking on this site since the very beginning. I had tried all the discover your purpose exercises Steve has and never really came close. I have tried to overcome my procrastination, overeating, poor exercise, depression, introversion, fear of risk in the past, but never really was motivated. Today I hope is the first day to changing all of that.

It is hard to explain in words what this did for me, but really wanted to put this out for everyone to see.

Thanks,

Matt

And since you put it out there for everyone to read, your dream might just inspire other people and not just you. I've had dreams that had a similar effect on me, so I can relate.

I like the key phrase in your dream too.
