Default Charity Advice for a Person Who's getting Started

Hi all. I'm about to invest in Site Build It!, and if that goes well it'll be the first stream of income I earn.

I've noticed that a popular theory amongst these personal development circles is that one should save 10% of his/her income (should have an easy time figuring out how to do that) and dedicate another 10% to charity. This was discussed in Steve Pavlina's interview with Marc Allen. This, along with the fact that I've been really spoiled growing up has me motivated but unsure as to how I can best give back to society.

What causes and charities do you feel are worth supporting? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

I understand that SBI is not a method for making quick money, but I want to be sure I can give back immediately as soon as I start making a profit.

Hi Psycho,

I think it is great that you are so willing to help out other people with your income. Generosity is something I really appreciate in people.

You should find a cause that resonates with you personally. Then you will be more enthusiastic about giving to that cause and both you and the cause will benefit more. I think it also helps to be involved in other ways besides just giving money.

Here are some ideas for causes:

Poverty: More than 1 billion people living on less than $1 a day and around 800 million people going to bed hungry every night. Many of these are children. We have the power to make a big difference to this. This is something I feel very strongly about. You can check out Make Poverty History - Home for more information. Some good charities to give money to are World Vision Australia homepage and Arguably the World's Most Useful Gift Catalogue.

Slavery: There are still more than 27 million slaves in the world today. Many of these actually live in developed countries like USA and Australia – often they are sex slaves. You can check out Not For Sale: End Human Trafficking and Slavery for more info. They have a map you can check for confirmed cases of slavery in your area.

Other ideas: climate change, education, medical research for any number of diseases (SIDS, breast cancer, MS, Batten Disease (My cousin died of this several years ago)), local community groups, animal welfare, poverty in your local area, even the advancement of arts and culture.

I hope this helps,
Kyle
