Default How To Polarize

It's taken me years to understand the polarization concept. I can understand why there is so much confusion over the topic.

It's because Steve didn't make the most important part of the topic explicit enough. Here it is, the magic formula for how to polarize and why polarization is a source of motivation:

ENERGY FLOWS WHERE YOUR ATTENTION GOES

Or, to put it another way, whatever you focus on you become emotionally invested in. The longer you focus on one thing, the more strongly intentional energy flows to it.

A real life example:

You watch a film and intitially you have no particular concern for any of the characters. You are just observing, taking in the plot. As the film progresses you inevitably become more and more invested in the well-being of certain characters. The longer the films goes on the more you want them to succeed. This is an example of how energy grows the longer you focus on one thing. Also, what are you NOT focussing on while you're watching TV? Service to either yourself or others! Out of sight, out of mind, out of significance.

Focus is a magnifying glass for ISSUES (issues being something you care about). It is impossible to care about something you never focus on. It is also impossible not to care about something you DO focus on. Think about that. And the longer you focus on any one thing, the bigger and more important that thing becomes to you.

Extend this principle to your life. Whatever activities you do you become invested in. If you perform a self serving activity your energy is directed towards that cause. Your mind becomes entirely taken up by thoughts of how best to serve yourself. The problems of others are out of sight and out of mind... irrelevant. However, you have just placed your own problems under a magnifying glass. They appear huge now! You become fearful and determined to take control...

Alternatively, you perform an activity with the intention of serving somebody else. Your energy becomes invested in their well being. Your mind becomes dominated by thoughts for their well being. Your own problems seem minor, and you have a sense of us "all being in this together." You become fearless and a strong sense of empathy to others. You feel their joy and pain and become determined to serve others... their good becomes more and more significant the more you apply the magnifying glass of your focus to it.

The longer you focus on an issue the bigger it appears. What is the implication of this? If you switch your focus you will never build up a great deal of energy towards any goal.

An unpolarized person is somebody who alternates their focus between self-service and service of others. When you alternate in your focus the magnifying glass has only a limited time to act before it is switched around.

Also consider this - one side of a magnifying glass makes something appear bigger. Well when you look through it the other way it shrinks! When you focus on your own issues the good of others shrinks. It does not stay the same.

So here is how polarization works:

You focus on one thing for such a long time that you have a massive energetic investment in it. Either yourself or others. One shrinks your perspective - you only see your own problems and they appear huge! Or you focus entirely on the well being of others and their problems appear huge, and your own insignificant.

When a problem appears to be very significant you are motivated to take action. If you never focus one way or the other you never become particularly motivated to take action.

When Steve said in this article Polarization that pre-polarization you can only experience a minor degree of energy compared to a lightworker or darkworker, it is because you can only develop a great deal of energy by focussing on one thing for a long time -- something you never do pre-polarization because you're flipping around all over the place the whole time.

Now, the practical bit:

HOW TO ALIGN YOUR ACTIONS TO A POLARITY

You must take responsibilty for what activities you partake in. What you choose to do will affect your polaity, depending on whether the action is aligned with self serving or other serving. Some actions are strongly polarized whilst some actions are in-between and grey.

Playing poker for money is strongly aligned with self service. You are offering no value, only taking.

Meanwhile some the polarity of some activities depend on how they are run. A business that treats it's staff as slaves to be goaded on with greed and whips, whilst creating a product that is consciousness lowering is very much aligned with self-service (power). A business that treats it's employees with a great deal of respect and allows them to be motivated by the joy of creating and offering value is very much aligned with love.

Try to think of "good" as promoting personal growth, rather than what is most effective per se. An aspiring darkworker may achieve more growth through an unethical business than an ethical one, even if the ethical one would be more effective. The goal is to become more strongly aligned with truth (solipsism), love (of self) and power (fear)... not financial success as such.

To become a darkworker you must only focus on your own well-being. The major activities of your life must be strongly aligned with self service.

To become a lightworker you must only focus on the well-being of others. Every action is intended for the benefit of the whole.

Darkworkers, that means don't watch TV!!!!! Watching TV makes you emotionally invested in the well being of the characters. If you're focusing on the characters you aren't focusing on yourself!!! Do you get that? Do you understand why that dissipates your focus to something other than yourself, and why that steals your motivation?

Similarly, if you allow to be held back over concerns for others you are mixing your focus. ONLY THINK OF YOURSELF. If you are doing work that involves creating value for people you are limiting your ability to polarize. What happens when you think about the needs of others? Your focus flows that way... eventually you will feel empathy for people. Your work should be focussed entirely on building power. Never think about the needs of others. Only think about how to get them to do what you want.

You must align every single thing you do to self service, and by definition do nothing to serve others. This doesn't have to happen all at once, but once you begin to shift the balance of focus strongly in one direction you will have increasing motivation to continue further because your thoughts and energy will become aligned with self service. Your own issues will become increasingly large, meaning ever increasing motivation to take action, and ever increasing focus on self. It's a spiral.

A good guideline for darkworkers is to practice the seven deadly sins constantly. Pride, lust, greed, envy, gluttony, sloth, wrath. It is worth mentioning that sloth does not mean laziness in it's original definition. It means indifference to the work of God. To not appreciate the world. Ingratitude.

Lightworkers must do the opposite. Avoid the seven deadly sins at all cost. Practice giving with joy, take interest in the well being of others, feel gratitude for the world and love it inconditionally. Be humble in your status in the world, but great in your desire to serve.

It is really very simple though. Devote your focus on yourself, OR others. Simple is not the same as easy of course. It's taken me a really long time to see how what I focus on shifts the balance of my energy. I'm only just beginning to understand it to the point where I can make a conscious choice. But choose I must and align my life totally one way or the other.

P.S. To enjoy the world counts as focussing on others. If you're enjoying the world what are you focussing on? The world.

then does that mean my teaching career (being a philosophy professor) does not qualify in a darkworker perspective since I'm focusing on teaching others?

It depends on whether you have a grand purpose to achieve through it. Generally speaking, being a philosophy professor is not a good alignment for fear energy.

A darkworker may seek to condition and control others to serve their purposes, but not genuinely educate them. Through a life of educating others you will become emotionally invested in the success of your students. You will feel empathy for them and care about them. This is not a choice. You can't consciously shut out love when it tries to emerge. That is guilt. What you can do is only engage in activities that generate fear energy.

Being a cold, calculating cult leader is a better path for a darkworker than a philosophy professor.

A business that treats its staff as slaves is going to fall flat quickly. It's in your personal best interest to treat your employees like relatives.

To get them to do what you want, you'll have to think of their needs.

Envy = focus on others
Greed = focus on other things
Gluttony = not paying attention to body shape
Wrath = why?

It's in your personal best interest to enjoy being in the world.

What's life without a movie? Without a trip to the beach? Without being around a funny person? Without a hot date?

Some of the things you said worry me in terms of if you plan to implement them. It sounds like an empty, soul-depleting and unethical lifestyle.

completely agreed here!
I do understand Plato's reasoning though and it makes sense on that level. But I think similar extremities may ultimately do more harm than good to a darkworker along the path.
Much of this hardly looks practical, I'd like to know how you actually use that stuff in your own life.

You don't have to treat people with visible disrespect to also treat them like slaves. Set them a carrot to chase, and make sure they know that they are helpless without you. Fear of loss and illusion of progression (incremental but ultimately insignificant pay increases) are the foundations of modern slavery.

You have the flawed view that certain things cause enjoyment... That is the pre-polarized view, which we all are here.

Enjoyment is something you are, not something that happens to you, or you do. Anyway, enjoyment is the by-product of gratitude so a darkworker doesn't go for that.

A darkworker's pleasure is more like self-gratitude, an inward feeling of heightened self-respect and it comes from committing to do what you must. Pleasure is to experience growth... to live your purpose.

Being polarized is a heightened form of enjoyment. When you're life is aligned in thought, perception and action you will feel amazing. You will have no incongruence, no self-doubt, and know that you are doing the right thing. What could possibly be better than that?
