I've been vegan for about 8 months now. My parents have always said it was stupid. They have criticised, been upset about it, damned me... As of this week they have started eating vegan, and are convincing themselves it's the right thing to do for all sorts of reasons. Amazing. |

On a similar note, a friend of mine has convinced his daughters stop being vegans and instead eat a well balanced diet, all things in moderation. Actually he had little convincing to do, they found they were gaining weight.

The difference is that I wasn't trying to convince anybody to be vegan. They saw me being happy and energetic on this diet and decided to open their minds to it.

So, to clarify, what do you mean your parents won't "let" you? Are they forcing bacon down your throat? Are the refusing you space in the fridge to store your beans and rice? How are they not "letting" you be a vegan?

If you live with your parents who won't "let" you try veganism, vegetarianism is a compromise you might be interested in. It won't require much in the way of special purchases because you can usually eat around the meat in family meals and still get a healthy, well-rounded diet. Still, even being a vegan is possible without your parents having to buy and cook anything extra if your family already eats a lot of fruits, veggies and whole foods anyway. Would your parents get angry if you just took side dishes on your plate and left the meat? They could actually save money by buying less meat. It may be a bit juvenile for you (don't know your age), but Vegetarianteen.com Online Magazine | Everything you ever wanted to know about veg teen life...by teens for teens. has resources to help you in dealing with your family and their site has lots of other info too. My point in all of this is that it doesn't have to cost your parents anything extra necessarily for you to become veg*n. |

However, my mom doesn't want to cook vegan meals for me, not because she wouldn't have the time for it like you, but simply because she says that it would make her suffer because she is against it. So she decided that as long I'm not earning my own money(meaning that I must grow up first), she won't cook vegan foods like she currently cooks vegetarian foods.

ATTENTION: {aspiring_to_clarity} & jaydeschizo Before you start an argument regarding "balanced diet" and "inclusion of meat/fish/eggs" on said diet, keep in mind two things: - There is no such thing as standard "balanced diet" that can be applied to everyone. Only "healthy guidelines" and those are too vague and broad to be anything too specific. I.e. it's an healthy guideline to drink water instead of soda and both regimes can follow or not. So It's possible for a vegetarian or a non-vegetarian not having their nutricious needs met. - It's more than likely jaydeschizo hasn't tried a 30 day trial regime without touching meat/fish/eggs that mets jaydeschizo specific needs, likewise, more than likely {aspiring_to_clarity} hasn't tried a 30 day trial regime eating meat/fish/eggs that mets {aspiring_to_clarity}'s needs and following "healthy guidelines" SO PLEASE! Be courteous, since this is a personal development foruns the vegetarian guidelines can be considered house rules so it's easy to bash non-vegetarians and forgetting the principles of love and oneness. |
