... similarly like asking "what is THE highest truth?" If I wrote here some detailed and convincing answer and you mindlessly accepted it, it would distract you away from your unique life expression. So, sorry, but you can only know what is the highest good of all for you. The other people have their free will and leave it to them to decide. You have to decide/connect with highest good yourself, nobody else will do that for you. But you don't even need 100% clear idea to start with. Just be honest to yourself and everybody else about what you do believe right now and accept that it may change... and the rest will be history Good luck/Hodne stesti! |

Descartes says that the only thing you know is that you know nothing perhaps? the greatest good is to never come to any definite conclusions. Always question. Set your ego aside. Most people are advocates of utilitarianism, but that's so subjective... Eliminating the seven deadly sins is a good place to start. Even if you're not heavily religious (i'm not) - they have stuck around for 2000 years for good reason. Last edited by dice; 02-05-2009 at 08:03 AM. |

The absolute highest good of all is probably best left as an abstract concept. What you could do, however, is to break reality down into smaller compartments and ask "what will lead to the best long-term result given these circumstances [insert your specific conditions]?" The highest good of all, if there is such a thing, will surely have nothing to do with what feels best to you at the present moment, but rather what is best for humanity/the universe in the very long term. Obviously these could coincide - you may find that choosing what feels best benefits both you and your environment in the long term as well. But in principle, the highest good of all uses oneness/universality as its reference point. You could apply this to all sorts of small every-day problems, but also to slightly larger personal problems and life-choices. For example, you may be searching for a new career. When making your choice of what to study or what job to apply for, you could ask yourself "which choice [given a number of career choices] will serve the highest good of all, i.e. which choice looks the best from a infinite perspective, or at least from a very long-term perspective? Which choice will enable you to serve humanity to the best of your abilities? Last edited by Eric Roosevelt; 02-05-2009 at 12:21 PM. |

I'm assuming you're asking this question because you're wondering what to do. The best advice on this taht I've found was given to me by my teacher: - Follow your conscience. Open a dialogue with your conscience, it'll often tell you things you don't want to hear but it's not always right. - Find a little problem that's bothering you. Just a feeling of bugging or a feeling of avoiding it. Fix it. Repeat with bigger problems. - Eventually you'l get so good you can tackle bigger and bigger problems and with enough experience under your belt so that you won't screw it up. Cause, as he likes to say, what the hell do you know? |

I don't know if you believe in the existence of God or a Higher Self, but answering a question like this for yourself requires an intuitive process. You must seek an understanding of the heart and not of the mind. You must clear your mind of all pre-conceived opinions and judgments as to what the answer should be, and then ask whatever higher power you believe in to give you an answer - be willing to hear the answer given to you, even if it contradicts what you want to hear.

I had to laugh as I read this thread. I think it says a lot about the person who answers "The highest good of all...HAS...to be what benefits others." I laughed because I had to read the posts carefully to make sure you weren't joking. How do you reach that conclusion, seriously? |
