Tonight my friend came over and we were planning to go to the movies. I was excited to see him, and while pulling out of my driveway, I continued to drive in reverse for a bit up the neighborhood street. It was only for like 10 seconds or so, didn't seem like a big deal. I was just being goofy with him. I'm a very safe and responsible person. Anyways, some car comes down the street as I'm coming. I find it kind of funny, because the car is likely just so confused at what's going on. I wondered if I should just turn around (which would involve a bunch of little turns), or just continue and pass the car slowly in reverse. I go slowly past it in reverse. I still don't find this to be a big deal. The other car eases a bit away from me, and as I pass it kind of chills near the other side of the road. Once I pass, this car backs up (even though it clearly could have driven forward and continued). It backs up like 10 feet and the crushes some other neighbor's mailbox (made of cement). At this point I'm just so confused what the HELL is going on. I figured the driver of the car was drunk and maybe didn't see the mailbox but I'm not sure. I left the neighborhood because I felt uncomfortable being around another car that just casually backs up into mailboxes. At the movies I spent the entire time analyzing the situation and wondering. Obviously I shouldnt have driven in reverse up the street, making the other driver uncomfortable. But I'm having trouble accepting the blame for this mailbox thing. Any thoughts would be MUCH appreciated. Just such an odd story. |

While this is quite an amusing anecdote, you really shouldn't look into it too much. I don't know why you'd spend any time analyzing it beyond the obvious hilarity. What kind of replies are you looking for? There's not really much to be said.

I'd say you're not responsible for th actions of another individual. Even if you inspired such an action, you prolly didn't inspire a destructive action. I love you describe the other thing as a "car" not as a person. Anyhoo, the other person may have been angered by your reverse driving and thought they'd drive backwards into a mailbox, which they may have thought was yours. |

Well, this story just got like 4 times stranger. The person who hit the mailbox was my next door neighbor! I thought the car looked a bit familiar and then saw it in their driveway today (the don't drive it much). So now I'm wondering if I should go over and discuss this with them. I have no idea how the conversation would play out, but maybe it's the right thing to do. Facing fears is always a good challenge, too. |

If you generally talk to your neighbour, sure, bring it up in conversation, but I wouldn't bother otherwise. They did something silly just like you did, but they obviously weren't as careful about it - you still made sure you steered clear of obstacles. These things happen. If you bring it up and you're not friendly with them normally, they might just get defensive. If you really need to get it off your chest, just go over and ask how their car's doing, because you saw them back into a mailbox and you hope they didn't do too much damage, or something else that shows neighbourly concern. |

I'm surprised this thread got bumped! hehe. Anyways, just to update everyone: My neighbor is NOT the mailbox crusher. The back of their car is unharmed. It must have been an outside visitor with the same exact car. (I'm just as confused as you are). |
