Out of curiosity I stumbled upon an article in the blog of Alexj which had some advice on how to understand ones' "mission". I carefully thought about it throughout the whole day and concluded that, whatever I really liked to do in my life it was to entertain people, whether by making them laugh, enjoy, learn something new, inform them. At the question "What mark do I want to leave on the world?", after I die. I got the vivid image of people laughing in simple joy. Actually, on my funeral, I want people to laugh happily, in reconciliation. I think I have done several things in my life to entertain others. Acting, dancing, singing, writing, composing music, but also with a great technical element to it. One of the things I first remembered was when I was a kid, I used to play a lot with LEGO. I liked making cities, buildings, planes, everything out of LEGO - but after I built everything, I always wanted to make a story with it and narrate it. I would make heroes go on adventures, and show my story to my friends. Strangely, I am studying Economics and Business at college... I am very interested in the subject from an informative point of view, but I wonder how I can use that knowledge to entertain people. Unless I become a good professor (I do enjoy teaching, I like speaking in public, using humor, etc.). My question to you: what other ways can exist to entertain people? |

I love to be entertained ! good ,creative, entertaining professors are hard to come by ! when I was in nursing school my favorite projects were the ones where I could use my medical humour to demonstrate serious subjects I once made a booklet about going to surgery and I used all kinds of funny cartoons and sayings to make the person laugh well maybe they didn't laugh they just kind of stared at me but it was a fun project one thing I am so grateful for in life was a dad that made me laugh and you know what they say about laughter being the best medicine |

There are no limits to the ways that you can entertain people. I'm also very interested in entertaining people, and I've done it mostly through filmmaking. I've also done it through many of the other arts. Just be creative. You can make funny videos teaching people about Economics in an interesting way, or you could write a song that is entertaining but also teaches about Economics. You can use any of the arts to entertain, teach, and do so much more. Express yourself in whatever way feels natural and fun. Do it in whatever way excites you. Let yourself go. If it's your passion, you will come up with something.

Please do become one of those professors who can teach as well as he can entertain... we can never have enough of those! If I am ever going to teach, I plan to be like this guy: Benjamin Zander on music and passion | Video on TED.com

JimOfferman, I have no idea why, but I waited like 10 seconds after watching the video, and burst into tears. This was probably the first time I burst into "sincere" tears since 3-4 years! I even looked myself at the mirror and my eyes were red, my whole face was expressively crying (sad), and I couldn't control it even if I laughed (I am also an actor...). Initially he looked quite a normal musician with good charisma, but perhaps deep inside something of what he said struck me, perhaps the ending story, or the choice of words ("shiny eyes", etc.). Now... let's see whether an Economist can make his students cry as well :P |
