Default Retraining dilemma

Wasn't really sure where to put this but here will do.

I have a dilemma. I am seriously thinking about going into teacher training for children aged 7-11 which takes 3-4 years. Starting salary is more than £10k less than I'm on now and the training is full-time.

I'm having hard enough trouble keeping on top of finances now but I'm sure I would find this career far more rewarding than what I'm doing now. How can I make this fit?

I'm nearly 40 BTW.

Thumbs up Follow You Passion

If you are passionate about something, the money will follow. The income shortfall will only be a temporary thing.

I would suggest learning about voluntary simplicity and being frugal. The reasons most people decide to adopt voluntary simplicity techniques are so that they can spend time doing things they find more rewarding than working 40-60 hour high stress jobs. You might get some great ideas about living better on less money.

Also, ask yourself why you want to teach 7-11 year olds. What is that you expect to get out of it? If you feel that teaching 7-11 year olds is currently out of your reach maybe there's something else you could consider that would satisfy the same desires and passions that would have a lesser tradeoff?

These are two separate issues. Being strapped for finances may not change becoming a teacher (or not). Being financially secure is simply about making sure income exceeds expenses. Can you cut expenses? Give things up? Pay off high interest loans or refinance for lower ones?

Go for the teaching job if you LOVE teaching, but don't do it just for the money. You will find yourself dissatisfied quickly.
