Default What experiences have changed you for the better?

What experiences have you been through that you think MADE YOU as a person? Did you consciously engage in these experiences or did they just happen? Was it over a short or long period of time?

What made these experiences so important in your development? Was it the challenge? Was it the emotional effect it had? Was it, perhaps, the material reward you got from it?

Was it the fact it aligned you with where you know you need to be, for example meeting an inspirational person and recognising the ways you could improve your life?

If we have a massive compilation of life changing experiences we can all feel inspired and maybe see new routes to consciously engage in our own growth.

I want to hear what's made you GREAT

The most defining experience for me was when I realised that I had to live for myself.

For a long time I thought my calling was to help others but I realised that I only felt that because that's what society as a whole had made me feel, combining this with the inherent sense of guilt all those who are brought up in even a vaguely religious climate feel, well, I had no choice at first, but now I have come to realise that for the world to improve we all have to help ourselves first and foremost. Only when we can competently help ourselves can we be truly qualified to help others.

Akash, I have to say you are my favorite poster here (you and Angie). I feel like we're kindred souls. I feel that since you are only 17, I can at 25 show you the mistakes I made in not being true to myself at 17 so that you won't make those mistakes. The Internet is a wonderful thing, esp with Steve Pavlina in the atmosphere.

I have experiences everyday that make me a better person and a happier one. I am grateful everyday for my cognitive abilities so that I have the gift of interpretation.

Being raped by a total stranger was the best thing that ever happened to me. I'm so glad it happened. It took me out of "please everyone in society, impress people so they will love you" mode and into "natural law, people are primates, it is what it is" mode. I have never felt better. I will NEVER go back to being that idiot at 17.

This week I have a job interview. It will take me from "no job" to "VERY impressive job" person. I don't care about the herd being impressed about my job. I scorn the herd. I love ME. I will most likely get this job. But either way I am fine. I love my life and I love who I am right now. And I owe it all to the rape and the things that happened subsequently, and the things that happen everyday.

I'm sorry Plato, that I come across to you as a psycho. It's unfortunate, but I am no longer trying to please people, so it's ok.

Wonderful CroMagna, I don't mean to high-jack the thread but your attitude towards your rape is a truly beautiful thing, if only more people could be so selfish

Wow Cromagna, my hats off to you. If I could wear more hats at a time, they'd all be off to you. Damn... you're amazing. Totally agree with Akashic. Even for a 25 year old, that's phenomenal. I have lots to learn from you.
