Default My Purpose/Passion/Career

Hi, I'm new here...

I've tried the 20 minute exercise but have had no luck yet.

Then I figured I'd throw something out to the group.

I like to write. I like clothing; not just fashion but how it's made, etc. I like expressing myself in an original way; like, with clothing I always have some style going on. I like "seeing the future" as in doing or thinking things before most people; I do this with clothing as well by predicting trends way in advance.

And I'm analytical too. I'm comfortable w/ science and like history and anthropolgy. I have a CS degree that I've never really used. CS was cool but I don't wanna be a programmer.

Can anyone detect a hint of my purpose or an idea for a new career in this mess?

Thanks

You said that you like expressing yourself in an original way. I would use that. In what ways to you express yourself? Music? Art? You said you like to write.. what do you write? Books? Poems? Music? If you are creative you can use that in almost anywhere in your life. You said you liked how clothes are made/ and fashion.. You can start maybe making a few t-shirts. Even if its just a t-shirt from wal-mart with some screen printing on it. Combine your talents. We sound similar interests this is something I would like to do. I just have little time now.

Hope that helps

Start an e-zine on fashion.

Well, my first instinct is to ask how many times you have tried the 20 minute exercise. When I was searching for my purpose, I tried the exercise recommended by Steve three times, and another one twice, and finally found my purpose while just sitting and contemplating.

I'm not saying that the 20 minute exercise doesn't work, but it may not always work the first time. Doing the exercise definitely helped my mind to ponder what my purpose could be, so it has some real and potent value, but I would warn against expecting the exercise to work the first time, or even the fifth time. As with my case, it may not even work while you are practicing it either. Just keep an open mind and keep pondering, and soon, it will come to you.

tylersch:
I just express myself in my day-to-day activities. And with clothing, as mentioned. I like the idea of expressing myself through writing and music, but I've never found the time (yet) to pursue these avenues. I don't write poems and such things, though I did a bit in high school; I'm a "practical writer." Just writing this response is fun for me. And I'm already considering a clothing company, though not necessarily t-shirts.

Michael:
I considered a clothing blog. Maybe....

Adam:
I did the exercise three times. I'm gonna do it again though.

Thanks guys.

If you do decide to go the route of web-based publishing, and since you like expressing yourself in an "original way", and since you have some experience as a programmer, I'd recommend getting familiar with CSS, perhaps Javascript, and perhaps graphic design. Knowing these gives you a lot of power over how your material is presented, so that you always have the option of tweaking the expression. Good luck.

Maybe a fashion blog targeted at programmers and other nerds, who understant nothing about fashion but know that knowing something about fashion could help them?
