Hey guys. First time poster, long time reader of Steve's blog. I've been spending a lot of time lately considering my personal effort in investing in others around me and how much better a job I could be doing. I think a bit of it has to do with the fact that I spent last year volunteering in Sub-Saharan Africa... an amazing and full experience, but one that leaves me searching for smaller (but equally important) things I can be doing for those around me now that I'm back home in North America and in university. I definitely experienced the personal benefits of giving to others, and while I was there I was blessed with the opportunity to see the Ripple Effects of others' investments in those that were less fortunate. I stumbled across a link today (ide-international.org) that will turn your $250 (CDN, less I'm sure if you're american) into an irrigation pump for farmers in 3rd world countries. It increases the family's income by 300% in the first year and permanently lifts them out of extreme poverty, allowing them to grow and help others out with their needs. So I was looking for a) other ways to do small things (even things that don't necessate financial generosity) and b) an opportunity to let others know about how you can cause HUMONGOUS Ripple Effects with a little bit of generosity if your'e able. Any suggestions? |

I don't have any details, but there are companies that make microloans to entrepreneurs in 2nd and 3rd-world countries. In Ukraine, $100 can be enough start-up capital to make a small business. So all it takes is $100 to permenantly make a difference in the lives of one entrepeneuer, hundreds of customers, and through ripple effect, the entire economy and standard of living of another nation. And it's easy to tell whether you're helping or not -- if you get your money back, you helped. And the money you got back can now go help another entrepeneur. If you don't get your money back, you only lost $100, and probably had some good effect anyway. |
